DELL suing domain tasting squatters

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...112801679.html

Interesting article. The domain 'registrar-squatters' have multiple companies set up so they can "taste" a domain for five days without having to pay for it, drop it so their other company then tastes for five days, and so on.... making huge profits off of what Dell claims to be "traffic intended for Dell and dozens of other Fortune 500 companies"

"traffic intended for Dell"

Worst bit of bitching I've ever heard.

spacedog 11-29-2007 06:20 AM

I snatched a domain from a domain taster once.

I collect WWII era military firearms & one day while checking domain availability on names, I started typing in names of certain models of firearms that I collect. One of those names turned up available, but I didn't register it immediately.. two days later, go to register it, but it was not available so I became bitter.. I checked a week later to see what kind of site was up because before it was just a parking page, figured they needed time to build.. lo & behold it was gone, so went to register it, but registration failed, damn cocksucker registered it again.. I checked whois & see it was registered that same day & realized this fucker was a kiter, so every 3 days I repeated registration.. 2nd time it worked.. snatched it from that fucking kiting motherfucker. :)

It's now a forum for collectors of this rifle instead of a stupid ppc page

Lots of registar basicly record every keystroke you enter in your domain search, and register the domains for the 5 days trial period allowed by ICANN. Then they put a landing page and check if they can make any money from it... if it's profitable, they keep it.

That's millions of domains on a landing page.

Also, don't forget kiters who taste, then drop & then reregister, then drop & they'll keep doing it for as long as they can, often years & never paying for domain

teksonline 11-29-2007 07:12 AM

blah, sue ICANN... they need to be sued every now and then anyhow... Bunch of do nothing asses

crockett 11-29-2007 07:14 AM

Yea if you are searching for domains never use a public whois sites for your searches and always register the domain right away if you like it.

teg0 11-29-2007 07:14 AM

the whole story is kind of weird

teksonline 11-29-2007 07:20 AM

I was unaware of any free period by Registrars, if this is the case, then ICANN should have known about such issues and done something about it..... they dont lift a finger or have a concern about anything until its forced.. So Dell SUE THE FUCKERS,

Kick Ass Chat 11-29-2007 07:45 AM

Interresting...

V_RocKs 11-29-2007 03:31 PM

This is why I type in a few bullshit domains every time I check on ones I actually want..

While it is free per se... it does cost some money... And when we all do it, it costs a lot of money.

According to one example cited in Dell's lawsuit, on May 25, 2007, DomainDoorman registered "dellfinacncialservices.com." On May 30, the registrar deleted the domain from its stable of Web site names. Minutes later, that same Web site name was snatched up by BelgiumDomains, which then dropped the name on June 4. That same day, dellfinacncialservices.com was grabbed by CapitolDomains, which in turn relinquished it on June 9, the same day that site was re-registered again by DomainDoorman.
Holy Shit Batman!

I need to start doing this!

Iron Fist 11-29-2007 03:39 PM

I believe it's so that a registrant can cancel a registration if they've made a mistake, obviously someone cottoned on to the loophole in this arrangement and exploited it. I'm sure it will be stopped eventually.

minusonebit 11-29-2007 04:08 PM

This scame is nothing new. Bob Parons at GoDaddy blogged about this a couple of years ago. Been long past time for them to close that loophole.

But this BS of it being traffic intended for Dell, now thats just about as dumb of a claim as one could make.

xenigo 11-29-2007 06:14 PM

I know for a fact that the assholes that run Dotster practice frontrunning. They sniped a domain a couple years ago that another registrar queried using their WHOIS. I went to go register the domain about 4 hours later, and - low and behold... Dotster owned it.

Hmmmmmmm.

Really fucking pisses me off.

PornMogul 11-29-2007 06:17 PM

Well we have all known about this for a long time.

One of the most shady practices that goes on.

Hope they get whats coming to them.

tony286 11-29-2007 06:34 PM

man thats very interesting.

PornMogul 11-29-2007 06:37 PM

I wish I knew how to domain taste. sounds fucking great

DaddyHalbucks 11-29-2007 08:10 PM

ICANN is another government agency that sucks donkey balls. They allow domain kiting --and they seem to be very cozy with Network Solutions, the monopoly that runs the central registry and just raised wholesale domain regsitration prices :(

And you want these idiots to run our health care system?

No, thanks.

LiveDose 11-29-2007 08:11 PM

Those assholes should focus on making better computers.

newsflash they aren't a us government agency. As far as health care you would rather have it run by companies looking to cut their costs and make money for their share holders. lol
