24" monitor or 1080p 42" lcd?
 

Thinking of getting a new monitor, i'll probably go for an economy 24" say something like this, as it's not too expensive and some people give it a good review.

However, my old plasma screen is getting a little tired and i was thinking about replacing it with a 42" lcd 1080p. Is anyone using one of these as their standard monitor? Is it actually possible to work on one of those? I tried on my old plasma which i think is only 720p and the text did hurt the eyes after some time. But the pixel size i think was the problem and should be better on the 1080p.

What are you guys using and what would you suggest. I still have an old 21" crt monitor i use if i am doing a lot of photoshop stuff. So this will be mostly surfing, maybe a few games and a limited amount of work related stuff.

Recommended viewing distance for a 42" is something in the range of 15'.

Well i wouldn't be doing that much work on it, mostly for surfing and some gaming. Sometimes i prefer to sit in a large arm chair / recliner and surf or play games and it can be hard to see a smaller monitor from any distance over 5 feet. However on the older 720p plasma even surfing the net kills the eyes after a short period.

Also one handy thing if you could use the 42" as a monitor would be that you could have several different things open to work on instead of keep moving between windows. I expect if you could sit with in say 2-5 feet and the pic was almost as clear as a standard 19" monitor if would provide a great work area. Sometimes if you have 9 or 10 applications that you're working on it is annoying keep switching between them, if i had a 42" monitor i would not blow up one application to full screen and use it, or if i did it would be very seldom for work purposes. Only really for IE.

However i have never seen a pc output on a 1080p 42" lcd panel, so i was just wondering if any one here has this set up and it is workable for light work and if text is hard on they eyes as with the 720p sets.

I've been using a 42" LCD as my primary monitor for about 8 months now and love it. Bit strange at first - but i now find i enjoy sitting back (though i am actually still quite close - about a meter and a half from the screen) to do my work.

if you want a monitor - go with the 24" monitor. lcd/plasma tv's have this thing called overscan which makes things look shitty when you hook up your pc to your tv since there isn't a 1:1 pixel mapping.

and the samsung 245b is really nice too. I just bought one last Friday for $329 and I have absolutely no complaints here

I have a 30" samsung LCD which I hook up to my laptop. Great for games and movies, horrible for reading text.

Yeah my business partner has a 42" 1080P LCD setup, and it's slick as shit. Looks beatiful and crazy for gaming with Dual 8800GTX cards running SLI.

i got 17" and thinking of upgrading.

I have a 42" 1080p, I'm pretty happy with it. Not sure if I like it better then the 30" dell but still overall pretty good. Has PIP so I can watch TV while I work.

I had to give up my LCD monitor, too hard for me to read. I replaced it with a 36" HDTV - so much betta!

So can we confirm big ass LCD TVs with 1080p are good enough for on screen text? from say 2 feet away?

I'd probably go with a 32' though 42' seems overkill.

Yeah. I think it varies a bit from brand to brand, but it looks fine to me.

Do you have the Dell 30''? I just won one from YappoDollars and really think it might be overkill. I can get a 24'' iMac for about the same price. I couldn't ever see buying one that size, but I'm not going to complain about getting one for winning a contest.

Went to see a 30" monitor today, the txt was super small because i think it was running at like 2500+ rez. When i asked to change it down to say 1900 for some reason the txt looked a little blurred to me. The 24" looked excellent and was really clear at its native resolution. The 22" looked even better but can't do the 1080p for xbox or ps3 or run over 1600 rez for pc games.

I'm going to try and find a 42" 1080p with a nice contrast and gloss screen in town as ask to hook my laptop up and see what it looks like. The laptop does not have a dedicated gpu though, its an intel x3100 so i'm not sure what the max rez out put on that is. I hope it can output the 1080p atleast or else i guess i won't know how my pc at home would look on it. Good to hear some people saying that these new 1080p have real potential as actual pc monitors. I'm sure in the next few years most people will be using their main living room screens to surf the net and play games etc. Be great to just have one massive monitor for all uses.

It all depends on how much reading you plan to do. I personally can't stand reading on TV's BUT I have the second DVI port on my video card hooked to my 720p projector.... I think 720p being projected ends up looking better than it does on a 32" 1080p screen. Of course with the projector total screen size is in the 100" range so its triple the size making it easier to read. primary purpose for using my projector with the PC though is for bigass divx/xvid movies and supersized porn.

using ffdshow you can use some tactics similiar to what upscaling DVD players do ONLY BETTER on the PC.
