What are the kids using to compress video these days.
Have a rather large .avi that I'd like to knock a few gig off. What are you guys using these days? I have a feeling things have progressed since the last time I did it.

Probably Xvid
|
do you want to convert the existing file, or re-render it from the edited source?

If you just want to do this one file, download windows media encoder or use windows movie maker. (both free)
If you're going to make a habit of this, then there are better options depending on how much you want to spend. |
ive seen DivX, Xvid (.avi) bicubic - H.264 .....become somewhat popular but the standard compression formats are wma and mpeg... no luck with matroska .MKV containers yet........
the average vid birtrate is 700-900kbs but for really cool quality you might want to go 1100kbs+ |

I'm not sure why you would suggest changing from AVI to another format. |
yeap .... whut ever you do don't deviate from the standard formats (avi, wmv, mpeg)
|
How uncanny
|
h 264 works great, particularly in a .MOV format, where at 1482 stream and a 640x480 size you are getting about 10-12mb per minute compression rate.
