Reckless Op Stuff
Hey,
I posted for some advice a few months back here, about a reckless operation ticket I received. The state trooper said I was drag racing, when I really wasn't. I got a lawyer for $500, and went to court a few days ago. He met with the state prosecutor, and plea bargained it down to a "dangerous vehicle" charge; resulting in an $80 fine, 0 points, and 0 record of anything happening. I'm glad I received no punishment, but I paid this guy $500 to talk to a state prosecutor for less than 10 minutes. I think in the future, I'll pay $250 up front, then another $250 if we have to go to trial. Kevin |
The alternative was probably a suspended license, a big fine and possible jail time. $500 seems fair to get out of all that. Most of us wouldn't even know what to say to the prosecutor or how to bargain it down which is why you fork cash over to lawyers.

What you didn't even consider was all the other charges lawyers throw in on each and every single case.
They have to pay a guy to go down and file paperwork, secretaries all that overhead jazz...even the time he spent talking with you on the phone is included in that and they bill by the hour. Also there might have been some postponements made which is how they do it in Texas...they just keep putting it off and putting it off until finally the state/city agrees to plea bargain it down or the officer doesn't show up to court that day and they dismiss it. And you also need to consider how much he probably saved you in insurance costs over the next however many years due to you not getting any points...in the end $500 isn't shit. |
He really should know that you weren't drag racing, seeing as how you were in a V6 : - )
