Thinking about getting a 1911, any input?

I was checking out the SW 1911 today, it feels nice, looks nice, overall I got a good feeling about it.

Any thoughts? Good gun?

The Judge 11-21-2007 09:14 PM

you want it as concealed or to keep at home?

I am in Calgary, Canada. No concealed weapons.

My Glock just jams too much, it is frustrating.

VForV 11-21-2007 09:21 PM

The 911 is inferior gun due to the ambolic metal that they infuse into the main shaft, i dunno bout you guys but that shit is whack to me. it takes away from the trigger action and therefore permitts me to think its a retarded gun. also it takes 2'' bullets...no go for me!

ProjectNaked 11-21-2007 09:21 PM

I have heard nothing but good things about them :thumbsup

but....always try before you buy :2 cents:

Spudstr 11-21-2007 09:42 PM

the 1911 has been around a very long time. I'm thinking about picking one up and getting into IPSC shooting with it.

Springfield has a 2011 now.

DaddyHalbucks 11-21-2007 09:47 PM

I hear HK makes a good hand gun.

I used to own a Sig, and it was top notch.

tedwinters 11-21-2007 09:50 PM

Shagbunny 11-21-2007 09:52 PM

guns are scary

The Judge 11-21-2007 09:54 PM

Get something modern, not a 100 year old design, Walther P99AS in 9mm / 15 rounds, about $600

Similar to IDPA.. Competition pistol shooting. Go youtube some IPSC or 3 gun competition.

Whatever floats your boat, some people like to shoot for competition. It beats standing in a range shooting a non moving paper target over.. and over.. and over.. and over.. and over again.

I like the 1911 and have one myself. feels good in my hand and the slugs won't go through a bunch of walls and kill the neighbors. the gun is good for close in self protection, not a 'rapper' pray and spray weapon. pick your shots and 7 will do the job. there are also some slower hollow points bullets available for home use.

One of the weapons I keep telling myself I must have, and just never got around to it. Nice gun, and a solid piece of history.

2" bullets? wtf are you talking about?

the 1911 is a good gun. i have a Kimber Ultra Carry II, which is a smaller version of the 1911 frame. i have never shot the S&W, but i have shot a full sized Kimber 1911 and it was a really nice gun.

evildick 11-21-2007 10:39 PM

I never understood how they manage to sell any handguns in Canada. The rules are so strict that it basically takes all the fun out of owning one.

You basically can't do anything with it unless you live near a gun range. They don't even let you shoot them on your own property, the last I heard. I assume that is still the case?

Plus you have to keep them double locked in your house, so you can't even look at them. (in a locked metal case with a trigger lock on it)

My local gun dealer has had the same handguns under his cabinet for about the last 6 years.

Casa Nova 11-21-2007 11:00 PM

That's one hobby I want to get into is collecting and shotting guns at a range etc.

What would you recommend as a starter gun, to learn on?

HighEnergy 11-21-2007 11:22 PM

The 1911 (original) was designed to do one thing and to do it well. And it did. Punching paper was not it's place in life. :)

The last one I had was "on loan" so to speak from the US Gov. I bought it from a guy returning from 'Nam who needed some cash for $15. I didn't ask any questions, he didn't offer any stories. He contacted me 2-3 yrs later and asked if I still had it. I knew when I bought it he would regret selling it and sure enough, he wanted to buy it back. I'm sure he would have paid anything for it but I felt like it was his, and had always been his. I asked him for the $15 dollars back. I would have gave it to him but I didn't want to insult him.

I liked your comments bm bradley, that's it's function. Close range and bullets that start to tumble if they touch a spider web. If the penetration path doesn't kill the shock from the ft/lbs of energy released will. It's a man stopper that you can use in a crowd of 100 without endangering the other 99.

yes a close quarters weapon, because if they are further away I'm gonna run like a mother fucker ... fuck a bunch of gun fighting :)

jeffrey 11-21-2007 11:54 PM

When picking a pistol go to the range and try every one they have.
I was going to buy an Springfield XD .40 because everyone I talked to loved it, but when I shot it, it just didnt feel right to me, the STI did though.

I have an STI Edge .40, Wish I could afford to shoot it more right now though.

I love the Walther P99, feels great in my hands. Would love to pick up a nice used one.
But 10 round max in Canada, well 10 in the mag and one in the chamber.

just went to the springfeild website, they don't make a 2011. they do make a nice little 3 inch 1911 though... what fun that would be.

the .45 will go through walls. I assure you that even a JHP will go through 4+ walls with ease.
Check out www.theboxotruth.com, I believe he even tests with a 200gr JHP .45.

Shotgun with 00 or 000 is still king for close quarters protection. Pretty hard to miss with a shottie too.

the .45 will NOT tumble unless it hits something with some good mass to it.
Any common pistol round may or may not endanger the 99 in a crowd of 100 depending where you hit the first person.

bobby666 11-22-2007 12:54 AM

i prefer my pez pistol

We're talking about two different things. Pay attention.

Enlighten me then.
As far as I can tell you were talking about the 1911, which is really just a frame classification on its own. But you were talking about a SW1911, which is a .45 unless you were using 1911 as assuming people knew it was the M1911, but thats still .45.
And a .45 still wont tumble easily, and will still pass right through a human target with ease depending where you hit.
