ICQ Question

Hey guys.. I'm new to the ICQ thing and I know most of you are veterans.

Since I downloaded it my firefox has been acting up but worst of all, ICQ opens everything in IE.

IE makes my feel like a dirty virus ridden sex slave and I don't like it... =(

Anyone know how to change the default browser for ICQ to Firefox?

papill0n 11-19-2007 04:46 PM

that is a good question ashley - it has been pissing me off too

FF is my default browser and they still open in IE :(

maybe some gfy'r will know :D

baddog 11-19-2007 04:46 PM

hmmm . . . you have FF set as your default browser for everything else? If you click a link in an email it opens FF?

Bro Media - BANNED FOR LIFE 11-19-2007 04:50 PM

Ashley, download www.pidgin.im its much better, open source program alot like trillian, i hated ICQ till i started using it with this...

baddog 11-19-2007 04:51 PM

This is not an ICQ setting, you just have to insure FF is set to be your default browser.

pfft . . . and you aftermarket people wonder why you can't get thru to people using ICQ

D 11-19-2007 04:52 PM

It's possible it's not an option.

ICQ = AOL = giving hand-jobs to Microsoft underneath the sheets.

D 11-19-2007 04:55 PM

The word "firefox" does not appear int he ICQ knowledgebase.

The phrase "browser" yields 5 results - none of which seem to be helpful in changing your default browser.

That said... I have firefox set as my default browser in general, and every ICQ link opens in Firefox.

You sure Firefox is set as your default browser in Windows?

Pretty damn sure unless it was changed. Everything else opens in Firefox. What OS are you using? Do you have the newest version of ICQ - 6 or whatever?

Let me check my settings and make sure it didnt change anything...

Dirty D 11-19-2007 05:02 PM

ICQ seems to open Internet Explorer even when Firefox is the default browser...

Wish there was some way to make money with these Damn Computers - lol

That was with ICQ 5.10 on a Windows XP Pro box.

I'll wrap up my ICQ convos now, and log on ICQ via my laptop.... Vista and ICQ 6 if that'll help your troubleshooting.

Yeah that would be great. IM me on there... Firefox is definitely my default. I disdabled all plugins that ICQ downloaded for IE thinking that would help but it hasnt...

Meh. I guess if I just uninstall IE then nothing can open in it eh? Lets see if we can fix it first.

D 11-19-2007 05:15 PM

Trillian's given me nothing but problems ever since I first heard about it back in 1998, or whenever the hell that was.

Never got all the ICQ messages intended for me, or properly sent the ones I intended to sent - IF I could get the interface working at all (which no one could for like the first 2 years)...

Tried it again recently... and someone in my office wasn't receiving the messages I sent to him... the first day.

I doubt I'll ever try Trillian again.

Maybe I'll take a look at pidgin one day when I have a day to waste.

I might have to try that... I wish I knew why ICQ does that. Firefox is definitely my default browser and everytime IE opens my whole computer gets sluggish and FF starts messing up.

ME and D are trying some troubleshooting but I'm considering uninstalling IE if it will let me... that'll fix it, I hope. Although I wouldn't put it past Microsoft to open in IE even when its not on my machine anymore... Just like all the spywear they don't have.

What's the setup on the box you're using, man? (ICQ version & OS)

I'm getting the same on my laptop... IE is definitely opening on links generated in ICQ chat windows while Firefox is definitely my default browser.

And I'm not seeing how to set it up differently.

This is kinda jacked up. I just might downgrade to 5.1 on my laptop if this is how it's gonna be.

Well, I learned long ago to not upgrade ICQ unless they forced it on me. The last time that happened was in 2001 . . . so I am using 2001b.

I may have a copy of the install file if you want it.

iSMOKE 11-19-2007 05:45 PM

ashley, use aim, dont be like these bandwagon hoppers. Most people here just use ICQ because their homo-chat buddies have it too.

Right, no reason to use the industry standard . . . what good would that do you?

I use AIM for my personal stuff. I have a few ICQ contacts on there but I realized at Webmaster Access last week that I needed to get with the program and get ICQ... AND it was a good choice. I instantly connected with a good hundred people in the industry I didnt have immediate access to 3 days ago.

Sooo, there you have it.

where did you go?

czarina 11-19-2007 06:16 PM

D, can you share with us all? I hate the fact that everything now opens on IE :(

Mutt 11-19-2007 06:17 PM

well you better learn how to use ICQ correctly because there was a solid affiliate I was chatting with last night and he tried to add you twice and both times you rejected his authorization request. :Oh crap

iSMOKE 11-19-2007 06:25 PM

whats your aim name

halfpint 11-19-2007 06:26 PM

Mine dont open explorer, but sometimes I dont get messages from the other person when in a conversation but apart from that its ok

thonglife 11-19-2007 06:28 PM

I cannot stand ICQ. It crashes my machine and you can't type more than one sentence without the flash banner below interupting what you're typing. MSN is much better imo.

iSMOKE 11-19-2007 06:30 PM

yea icq is a shitty messenger service. It's about as low as myspaceIM

Nothing to share, really... except that it looks like ICQ 6.0 (for windows) opens links exclusively in IE. Maybe there's a way around it, but not one that I realized after checking it out for a few mins.

If everything of yours (not just ICQ-induced links) is opening in IE, you might have it set as your default browser. You can change that bit hitting up Tools --> Options --> Main --> "Check Now" in Firefox.

For Ashley, I just linked her to a cnet download page for ICQv5.1, and offered she uninstall 6.0 and install 5.1, since it opens Firefox well enough for me.

And I hope some of that info helps you.

Alt-S

I hate it when I get messages every time you hit enter . . . type a paragraph, then send.

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 11-19-2007 07:40 PM

Hi again Ashleysteel, if you are running Vista you can uninstall IE and that will fix your problem, now if you are running XP I would uninstall the programs in question and check the Windows registry using a software program then reinstall your programs... and hopefully everything is ok!

Later,

.

That must be a default setting cause I haven't changed anything. Perhaps its cause I wasn't at my computer today... otherwise I have no idea.

If he got rejected, it was automatic.

Hey sweetie.. for some reason I'm not getting my emails through NATS. I will have to check with them in the morning. I see I have a couple signups too but they were never forwarded. Michelle should be able to fix it in the morning.

In the meantime... Can you hit me up on ICQ and I will give you my support email address?

After Shock Media 11-20-2007 12:38 AM

I know you did not ask or say but really IE can and is very damn secure if you run the proper precautions and are not an 100% newb.

baddog 11-20-2007 12:39 AM

an 100% ?
