What is your all time favorite long song?

in all of rock history, say 6 minutes or longer. They're doing this "Long song weekend" thing on the local classic rock station all weekend here and so far I'm loving it. Got me thinking as to what long songs really stand out for me, and I must say it's been great to hear some of them played again. A lot of them don't get much radio air time simply because they are too long.

A few that instantly come to mind to get you started.....

In a gadda da vida --- Iron Butterfly
Funeral for a friend --- Elton John
Load out/Stay -------- Jackson Browne
Do you feel like we do?- Peter Frampton
(This is) The end ------ Doors
November Rain -------- GNR
War Pigs -------------- Sabbath
Kashmir --------------- Led Zep
Stairway to heaven ---- Led Zep
Tubular Bells ----------- Mike Oldfield (48:53)
LA Woman ------------- Doors
Riders on the storm ----- Doors
Freebird ---------------- Skynyrd
Shine on you crazy diamond - Floyd (13:32)
Won't Get Fooled Again -- the Who (8:33)
Welcome to the Machine - Floyd (7:33)
Time -------------------- Floyd (7:06)
Echoes ------------------ Floyd (23:28)
Layla -------------------- Derek & the Dominoes (7:05)
Cowgirl in the Sand ------- Neil Young (10:06)
Jungleland ---------------- Springsteen (9:33)
Down by the River -------- Neil Young (9:16)
Roundabout --------------- Yes (8:32)
Hey Jude ------------------ Beatles
Judy Blue Eyes ------------- Crosby, Stills & Nash
Frankenstein --------------- Edgar Winter
Hocus Pocus --------------- Focus
Home by the Sea ----------- Genesis
Stranglehold --------------- Ted Nuggent (8:23)
One Bourban, One Scotch, One Beer - Thorogood (8:30)

Any others that stand out for you?

Welcome to the Machine - Floyd (7:33)
first thing that came to mind and it made the list too :D

November Rain - GnR

The only depressing thing I'd let myself listen to for that prolonged period of time

oh, and American Pie -- Don Mc Lean

GrouchyAdmin 11-10-2007 07:44 PM

You've covered almost all I can think of that lasts that long and is rock.

Trance would be a lot easier, but a hell of a lot harder to whittle down.

Bat Out Of Hell

Inna gadda da vida comes first to mind.

My drunk wanna be a band neighbors used to sit outside and play Stairway To Heaven (very badly and they lost their place so it went on and on and on)at 3AM until we took to randomly shooting off a shotgun in the air.

I live in a small Southern town so that was accepted behavior.

Calico Jack 11-10-2007 07:48 PM

American Pie and Hey Jude.

Grouchy Admin... you mentioned Trance.... I was trying to stay within Rock, but when I was digging my currently cluttered ADD head for a song, one of the first that popped in was ZOCALO -- Armin Van Buuren ---- I had an "long, eventful night/morning/afternoon/night" one time and swore it was the story of my life -- with no lyrics.

Semi Charmed Life ... Third Eye Blind

CTB: No way that's six minutes, bud.

Here are 10. I tried to pick songs from different eras in rock. The Beatles' "Hey Jude" was the first single ever released with such a long running time, so it was only appropriate to start with them. They were the first to do pretty much everything in rock.
  1. The Beatles - Hey Jude (1968) - 7:05
  2. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy For The Devil (1968) - 6:27
  3. Led Zeppelin - Dazed and Confused (1969) ? 6:26
  4. Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Heard It Through The Grapevine (1970) - 11:07
  5. Elton John - Someone Saved My Life Tonight (1975) - 6:45
  6. The Who - Who Are You (1978) - 6:16
  7. Golden Earring - Twilight Zone (1982) - 7:48
  8. Radiohead - Paranoid Android (1997) - 6:23
  9. The White Stripes - Ball And Biscuit (2003) - 7:19
  10. Green Day - Jesus Of Suburbia (2004) - 9:08

Awesome. How could I forget that one?

November Rain tops my "long song" list.

I also like NOFX's "The Decline".

evildick 11-10-2007 10:17 PM

"At War With Satan" by Venom. It took up the whole first side of the cassette. (yes, I said cassette) I believe it was just under 20 minutes long. Pretty cool tune that tells a story about angels battling Satan's army. I always kinda wished they would make a movie out of it.

Anyway, for something less obscure, Metallica's "One" is pretty sweet. I believe it is just under 8 minutes. They always used to play the short version when they aired the music video on TV, which always pissed me off.

EonBlue 11-10-2007 10:18 PM

>>> Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick (43:50)

Other good ones:

Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here (12:02)
Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize (17:42)
Porcupine Tree - Deadwing (9:46)
Tool - The Grudge (8:36)
Tool - Lateralus (9:24)
Spock's Beard - At The End of The Day (16:28)
Van Der Graaf Generator - After The Flood (11:36)
Temple of the Dog - Reach Down (11:12)
Led Zeppelin - In My Time of Dying (11:04)

Close. The runtime of the original track is only 5:48

Although you could be thinkinng of the live version witch I believe was much longer.

One "long song" by Dire Straights that I always loved is called Telegraph Road.... it's on incredible tune, and a true long song.
