How many of you spend money on the Internet?

Just back from Prague where I had a very interesting conversation with a professor of IT marketing. He's at Brunei University and in Prague for the show to learn more about mobile phones marketing.

He said, and I think it generally true, broadly speaking people buy on mobile phones services and products they would not pay for on the Internet. He stated music, porn, chat, info, etc as examples. And stated it was not the "availability" that was the problem. It was the way people perceive the two services. One is where you pay for everything the other is where it should be free.

So who here buys on the Net, non adult/business related, and what are your patterns of buying?

Juicy D. Links 11-10-2007 01:39 PM

All the time.

woj 11-10-2007 01:52 PM

I'm not sure I understand what you mean here ->
"broadly speaking people buy on mobile phones services and products they would not pay for on the Internet"

If you are talking about buying wallpapers or ring tones for my phone, then hell no... I would NEVER pay for something stupid like that...

but to answer your question, yea, I buy a lot of stuff on the net, probably more than I spend in normal stores... it's cheaper, faster, have more choices, going to normal stores doesn't really make any sense any more....

<-------- All the time.

He was talking about the customs and the way the Internet is regarded as "free" and anything you get from it should be the same. Then the same things the same people buy the service on a mobile.

Chat being the best example, lot's more if you think of them.

I expect workers selling on the Internet to be the best at buying on the Internet. I buy all the time. Music, DVDs, books, etc.

BlackCrayon 11-10-2007 02:16 PM

People who think everything should be free online are morons. He does raise a good point about how people see the two things but personally i much rather buy using my PC than phone. As of now mobile phones just aren't that friendly for internet use.

Spunky 11-10-2007 02:24 PM

I buy a lot of stuff online

KILL_FRENZY 11-10-2007 02:50 PM

I can say I spend often money on the internet ....It's a good and easy way to buy

minusonebit 11-10-2007 03:01 PM

I hate going to regular stores, I'd order everything online if I could. Why go to fight crowds, pay higher prices and deal with rude employees when you can order online without the nagging of a sales "associate" as they like to call them and have it sent to your door. Amazon now even ships most shit for free, how can you go wrong with that?

Paul Markham 11-10-2007 03:32 PM

One of the things he said was 30% of all traffic on the Internet is accessing free stuff. Meaning Torrents.

Xrated J 11-10-2007 03:34 PM

i buy all kinds of shit off ebay all the time.

VeriSexy 11-10-2007 03:36 PM

All the time.. the delivery person knows me pretty well

Iron Fist 11-10-2007 03:38 PM

I buy stuff from amazon... books mostly - just can't beat the selection. Porn would be better bought from home, you think i'd want to be seen coming out of a porn ship/adult store? Everyone has a stigma thinking your some kind of child molesting pervert coming out of there...

apart from software - a few books and one DVD

In general the US peeps shop on the Internet like hundred times more than the Western Europeans

BOSS1 11-10-2007 04:06 PM

all the time mang

ThumbLord 11-10-2007 04:34 PM

all the time, mainly books and CD/DVD

GreyWolf 11-10-2007 05:09 PM

Apart from biz stuff - don't buy anything off the net Paul.

Telecoms is a varied biz and often depends on whatever regulators exist from country to country along with the degree of penetration of facilities which actually work and an ability to bill for services etc.

Best ever earners was from audiotext and that was mainly an EU thing and a few other countries. The UK prob still has the best charging facilities and revenue rates in the world for capturing audiotext global traffic. The North American market had the obstacle of the FCC etc and ended up stuck with 900 numbers and restricted the market potential, but it was still a good earner - a friend earned $12mill in three months from that market, but unlikely to be repeatable. It's an industry which has been abused by scammers and dialer swindles - there is always some idiot who will screw any biz up :pimp

I still think the online money thing could be a lot easier

people buy on their cell phones cuz they just press a few buttons, no credit card needed, and it shows up on their bill

the internet would sell alot more if everyone had a running total of cash available at the press of a button... even for buying content for a few pennies here and there

Grapesoda 11-10-2007 07:12 PM

all the time, books, music, food stuff... some gear etc.

trix 11-10-2007 07:26 PM

Often. Overstock, Amazon, Ebay.

A few clicks and what I want is magically available.

Calico Jack 11-10-2007 07:51 PM

All the time, cd's, perfume, clothes, video games plus Amazon & EBay get a lot of business from us! Not to mention our adult stuff.

GrouchyAdmin 11-10-2007 07:52 PM

I buy shit through the internet, but the only thing I spend money on internet related is either domain names, servers, or access.

czarina 11-10-2007 07:55 PM

I buy stuff online more often than I do in actual stores. But I don't buy porn :)

just a punk 11-10-2007 09:51 PM

I'm used to buy many things via the Internet only. For example, I've just spent over $1000 a week ago to upgrade my PC through the online computer shops.

And of course I'm spending lots of money every month to pay for hosting, domains, content and various business-related services. I'm also paying all the fees for mobile services, IP television etc using online payment systems only.

candyflip 11-10-2007 09:57 PM

I buy everything online. Even if I'm going to pick it up in the store (ie Best Buy, Circuit City) I always order online first so it's waiting for me when I get there.

Sebastian Sands 11-10-2007 09:58 PM

most of us do business online, what do you think the answer is? If it's buying content, hosting, the list goes on..

2012 11-10-2007 09:59 PM

anything and everything

shahab6 11-10-2007 11:28 PM

I buy books, and items I can't find in stores.

the Shemp 11-10-2007 11:30 PM

i buy stuff online all the time...

BlueDesignStudios 11-11-2007 01:02 AM

interesting perspective...

Vitasoy 11-11-2007 01:14 AM

Most of the stuff I buy are from online

D 11-11-2007 01:19 AM

Pretty much the only thing I buy at the store these days is groceries.

I plan to have all of my Christmas shopping done online, and by the end of November.

Drake 11-11-2007 01:27 AM

Occasionally. Stuff from Amazon (books + music), weight lifting juice, software, minor equipment.

BlondeBecks 11-11-2007 02:58 AM

Internet shopping works pretty well for me especially around holidays.

Yes, I'm THE woman that hates to shop or go to the mall.

Barefootsies 11-11-2007 05:32 AM

I buy all the time, and my patterns vary on what I need, or looking for.
:2 cents:
