Aids in South Africa
 

I was watching TV and saw that 1 in 9 people in South Africa are infected with HIV, they even went as far as adding a seasme street character who is infected with HIV to teach children about the diease. I wonder if in time South Africa will see the infection grow worse like 1 in 5, I also wonder if the US will ever see such terrible numbers.

There are countries in Africa where AIDS is even worse than South Africa.

Of course, in most of Africa 1 in 4 have AIDS. South Africa is the "best" part of Africa, and its still seriously fucked up.

I cant imagine the situation to improve over there I think its going to get worse, the US too, there are so many people who have it and spread it unknowingly and knowingly

Could you imagine being in Africa, in some crowded area and just stop and look around and there would be people with AIDS all around you. Blech! Gives me the willies!

When I was a teenager my mom worked in a hospitial with a entire floor dedicated to AIDS patients in Portsmouth VA, drove her to quit. I bet there is a whole lot more people who are infected then we think. I hope we never see the day when they add a HIV infected seasme street character to our childrens programming

All countries with an AIDS population should do what Cuba is doing -> they send them all to quarentied area of the country to live out the rest of their days with other people who have AIDS. The result? AIDS is becoming wiped out in Cuba.

Cuba has one of the lowest percentage of people with AIDS out of any country in the world.

Almost <i>half</i> the population in Zimbabwe is infected with HIV. And it's a common belief that having sex with a virgin cures AIDS. As a result, you don't find many virgins in Zimbawe.. I won't go into detail, 'cause it sickens me just knowing that.

Because the US is full of pussys (Canada too). You would save millions of lives if you isolated people with HIV. But the pussys, gay/lesbian groups & other idiots would cry out that isolation is wrong and people with AIDS should be allowed mingle with the healthy.

It's not inbreeding or anything, it's just lack of education. It's sort of like the equivalent of an Urban legend in the united states. You have those that are gullable enough to believe them. In Zimbabwe, similar situation. Not only are they gullable enough to believe it, but they're desperate enough too. It's really quite sad.

Probably more people will die of conditions related to obesity, and Sesame Street even has a couple FAT characters (big bird comes to mind as having a pear shape), but talking about overeating and obesity isn't as much fun as talking about people who may (or may not) have gotten their disease through behavior many of us still regard as scandalous.

So where do you draw the line - just aids - or any STD? Seems a little extreme to me.

People know how to prevent aids - don't have sex or use a condom. It isn't rocket science. In the US most people know this.

Most people that have hiv don't even know it. They will still beout there - and those that suspect they have it would be hesitant to get tested if it meant having to live apart from friends and family.

who's to say that maybe in the near future a strain of Ebola virus or Aids will mutate and become an airborne virus that will spread just by breathing in the spores. Then we are fucked. Regardless of how far away we try to isolte those infected.

Ebola Reston was in Virginia and was AIRBORNE. Luckily it didn't kill humans and appeared to only kill monkeys. Change a few genes here and there and what do we have - well it ain't pretty.

And viruses are MUCH faster than humans. We will never be able to do what wwe did to smallpox ever again. Things have changed. And that was only a few decades ago. That was the only disease man has wiped off the face of the earth (we hope).

I live in South Africa, and I think it is worse than 1 in 9. If people with aids die in hospital they do not put on the death certificate that it was aids but rather TB or whatever infection the got while having aids. But the president and minister of health once said that HIV does not cause aids. No I'm not a doctor but that is a stupid thing to say.

Some doctors say that in rural areas infected people is closer to 1 in 4, but like the crime statistics the goverment do not release, we will never be sure.

Yea -- I saw a show about how they don't like to mention they have AIDS -- they always say they are sick with some other disease. We (the world) should just isolate the people who have AIDS like Cuba did.
