I think his confusion stems from assuming that only MAMMALS give live birth. Some arthropods, some fishes, and a few reptiles also give live birth instead of eggs.

they come out from between the pectines. if you look at a ventral view of a scorpion you'll see two little flipper looking things, those are the pectines. when sexing scorpions the number of pectoral teeth along the ridge of the pectines are counted, for most species that is. other species have more obvious sexual dimorphisms.

also, if you've never seen a seahorse give birth, go look some videos up on youtube. they seriously look like they're cumming babies out of their chests. it is a little bit disturbing indeed...

there is a species of frog (can't remember it off the top of my head) that actually swallow their own eggs, biologically turn off their internal production of stomach acid, and hatch their young in their stomachs. they then regurgitate the young froglings after they've grown from tadpoles. pretty crazy things nature does...
