Before you say that is a SOUPED UP version of Askjeeves, check out the diagram regarding their fact/result filtering system.

96ukssob 11-07-2007 07:26 PM

im sure there are plenty of search engines better than google from a user perspective, but i dont think it will have the slightest impact on google, and if it does, they will buy them and/or copy their ideas and market it as their own

Jayvis 11-07-2007 07:31 PM

i thought askjeeves was better?

papill0n 11-07-2007 07:31 PM

despite the horrible echo on the audio that does indeed look interesting

Validus 11-07-2007 07:32 PM

Nothing Is Better Than Google. Clear As A Bell :)?

StuartD 11-07-2007 08:19 PM

better? In terms of how it gets results or the pure amount of traffic it has to offer?

ClickBuster 11-07-2007 08:37 PM

So far there's no other Search engine like Google for its ability to gather internet information fast. I went to Ask.com to search for a term in my local language - brutally irrelevant and poor results. As for Yahoo - they and Microsoft's search engines are powered by GOOG.

I like what those people said in the video, but I don't understand why its in a prerequest reistered beta...

Does anybody have any good questions he/she'd like to ask a search bot? I don't... Wonder why will it answer if ask "how do I get laid tonight" or "how do I make a million dollars"... the whoe question asking idea really kills the search spirit and the pleasure of digging in the SERPs

rogerrabbit00 11-07-2007 08:51 PM

Think. Google indexes back links.

That pretty much sums it up. I tend to agree with you. Many of these venture-driven search companies seem like thinly veiled attempts at getting bought out by Google. Why not? It's a quick return on investment for antsy VCs in light of today's shaky global investment marketplace.

SPACE GLIDER 11-07-2007 11:59 PM

hmmm worth looking into anyway

kenny 11-08-2007 12:07 AM

google isn't so good when searching for hard to find things.

Google favors the bigger sites and will list them above more relevant sites.

I tend to click "cache" when searching google just to highlight what I'm looking for. More often then not the top results mention my search term briefly and the more relevant sites are on page three or some shit.
Google is lopsided when it comes to big sites vs. relevant sites.

tiger 11-08-2007 12:16 AM

Google has reached critical mass. It will take way more then a better mouse trap to knock them off.

This discussion does raise another possibility:

a) There are many niche search engines that are good at searching for specific topics or certain ways of searching (e.g. using questions, using hierarchies, or using knowledge bases) or certain ways of spidering (natural language).

b) None of these really pose a threat to Google since they are small and specialized

SO... why not aggregate them through some souped up metasearch ???

I remember when altavista was the king of search... then the G started taking over and I've never looked back... I don't even use yahoo... google has it all and they know it... like a sexy blonde hotty

Do you think such a paradigm change can happen again at this day and age? The difference between AV and G was that G now makes a shitload of money. AV wasn't very well monetized back then. Maybe that accounts for PART of why it slipped into obscurity?

Exact same as me. altavisa was king, used it for everything. Then it was a move to google.
