Thats back when basically only .gov and .edu got any use and it was almost exclusively for ftp use. Probably those .coms were registered just so the companies could interface with DoD and University resources.

Anyone selling any pre-1990 domain?:)

will76 11-08-2007 02:50 PM

that looks like all companies registering their own names. I would love to see a list of the first 1000 .com registered when individuals started doing it for potential income, like sex.com free.com etc...

I bet some people had some huge blunders. Didn't Lars register cyberzine.com or some shit like that back in 95 ? I am sure there were names still around back then that would be worth millions today.

yahoo-xxx-girls.com 11-08-2007 03:08 PM

Cool facts...

November 1983 ? The rapid growth of the internet caused massive problems in bookkeeping. To deal with this problem a group including Jon Postel, Paul Mockapetris and Craig Partrige published RFC 882 which created the domain name system (DNS) to make Internet navigation easier. With DNS, users can type host names such as ?USC-ISIF? instead of ?10.2.0.52.? Every Address would have information from specific to general.

October 1984 ? RFC 920 establishes 7 generic ?top level domains? (gTLDs, including .com, .net, .org and .gov) to provide domain space for corporations, non-profits, schools, networks, US government offices and the US military.

1985 ? DARPA put pressure on Internet Users to adopt DNS addresses.

There were earlier Domain Names, but they were for testing and were not commercial as it is today... as far as I understand they no longer exist.

I rarely see a .com for sale that was registered in 1998 or earlier. Any that sell go for a pretty penny (so to speak), more like at least a few grand!

Nicky 11-13-2007 08:09 PM

I regged loads of domains in 98-99 and what the fuck did I reg?? Loads of shitty 20 letter domains that werent even generic :(

When I started to realize that regging ebonyvideos.com instead of blackslutsuckysuckyvideos.com it was far too late

2012 11-13-2007 08:46 PM

Too bad that DNS got pushed through. I still think it would have been easier/better if everything ran off IPs.

Not really. MS never has been on the cutting edge of anything except failure. :2 cents:
