I hate buying software online!

It sucks, so I am working on a project tonight, and I need this software, so I go online to buy it, and all over the website it says instant delivery. So I put in my credit card, make the purchase, then I go to check my email for the registration code... NOTHING... so I go back to the web site, and start going through their support and it says it takes up to 24 hours to get the registration code... WTF?!

They want to check for fraud.

They should be more forthcoming about the policy. I have been hit several times with the same damn thing. Everything just about screams instant and then latter you find out instant means something like when I feel like it. Also it does nothing to stop fraud. They will not know if it was a stolen card by the next day, at most they maybe clear a batch and just know it went through cause they were to lazy to auto process.

I know what you mean. It burns me up to try and buy regular merchandise and then find it's on back-order only after you've purchased it.

you buy software?

I agree, its a deceptive practice. And it does cut down on fraud. You never KNOW if its a stolen card until the charge back comes. But you can screen the orders and kill those that are obviously fraudulent.

For instance, consider this order:

Inbound AMEX order, ticket $299. Customer provides billing addresses of Steve Smith, 123 Main Street, Columbus, OH 43228, e-mail address of [email protected] and phone number of (405) 555-4040. IP address in Russia. AVS does not match, CVV matches. You call phone number and get a generic OGM. Reverse lookup on the phone number gives you an address of 1941 Midwest City Blvd, Midwest City, OK 73079.

This order is fraud because:
  • NPA 405 is Oklahoma City, OK. But customer has claimed billing address in Columbus, Ohio.
  • Russian IP addresses placing orders with USA billing addresses are highly suspect.
  • Phone traces back to an address other than the billing address and in another state.
  • Lack of an AVS match indicates fraud in this situation.
  • Free e-mail addresses are a sign of fraud.
I can look at orders as they come in and tell - with a great degree of accuracy - which ones are good and which are bad. So delaying fulfillment to examine orders is legit, but the company should be up front with the fact that there is a 24hr hold for fraud screening.

This is my point about the whole thing. I mean now looking back they take Paypal, and if I would have paid via paypal, it would have been instant and I could be working on my project right now, probably have the part that the software is required for done. But now, I have to wait for them to let it go through, and while they say within 24 hours, who knows what it actually will be.
