Actually Sparta wasn't that bad about male on male sex. Most Spartan men liked women just as much if not more than men. Athens was known as the real center of homosexuality and boy love. Spartan relationships between two men were more about respect and brotherhood although homosexuality was still more prevalent than today all over Greece.Comment

You mean a series of great and sometimes lucky sea battles where an Athenian general had organized a combined land and sea stance where using his political skills was able to enlist a small number of his spartan enemies and a few thousand other troops to help defend Athens from the Persians in that narrow trail since they were still butt hurt about Marathon. Then after the Spartans and several hundred other soldiers got surrounded and ass raped since they no longer had a very simple tactical advantage. The navy cleared Athens and allowed it to be burnt only to then fuck up the Persians by performing more naval battles via a series of very well thought out battle plans.Comment

Well, Sparta didn't have Pederasty as Athens did, but that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't homosexual.
Whether or not it extended into adulthood is up for debate, but I think you could at least agree that it was rampant in the barracks of the youth, as they were undergoing training, and had no real contact to speak of (except maybe a stolen night here or there) with members of the opposite sex.
From there, I do- as many do - extrapolate that the society was homosexually oriented, even with the void of much contemporary evidence one way or the other.-D.

With all due respect imo that is not really historically accurate. Pleaes name your source because it certainly is not in Herodotus, Xenophon, or Thucydides which are the most important sources for this information and also the most misquoted. There was a city state that used gay soulmates as a special regiment because they figured that they would fight harder to protect each other but that was not Sparta but Thebes.

According to Xenophon, the Spartans abhorred the thought of using the relationships as the basis of unit formation for placing too much significance on sexuality rather than talent. This was due to their founder Lycurgus who attacked lusts on physical beauty regarding it as shameful. Xenophon asserted that in some city-states the lovers would not even have conversations with one another. He said this type of behavior was horrible because it was entirely based on physical attractions:
"If as was evident it was not an attachment to the soul, but a yearning solely towards the body, Lycurgus stamped this thing as foul."
Nonetheless city states that employed the practice in determining military formation enjoyed some success. The Thebans had one such regiment as the core of their entire army. They attributed this group called the Sacred Band of Thebes for making Thebes the most powerful city-state for a generation until its fall to Philip II of Macedon. Philip II of Macedon was so impressed with their bravery during the battle he erected a monument that still stands today on their gravesite. He also gave a harsh criticism of the Spartan views of the band:
"Perish miserably they who think that these men did or suffered aught disgraceful."

For the most part, my source is a couple of collegiate lectures on the subject in the last 2 years... one at a junior college, and one at a USN&WP top-20 ranked university - and both presented by Doctors of History.
Nothing hard, because - well, if I'm not mistaken, there's really no hard evidence either way. The very passage you quoted can mean various things. One - as historians often do in regards to times of antiquity - has to infer based on the circumstantial evidence.
Perhaps I over-spoke when I said they were a "city-state of homosexuals"... but I do feel it was certainly a part of the norm... the norm that 300 did little to no part in expressing... One of my later posts in this thread (than you quoted) expands on my thoughts more specifically.
I find it ironic that ever since the release of the movie, many are equating their image of 'manly-men' with that of Spartans... many who would consider homosexuality contrary to the 'manly-man' image... and perhaps I got a bit over-eager in my effort to challenge preconceptions.-D.

No worries, I am just a former student who likewise took classes, heard lectures, etc. and read tons on this particular part of history and I consider myself an amateur history buff - however, though I took years and years of Latin I never did learn Greek to be able to do my own translations.
The evidence is not all circumstancial btw since the ancient historians that I mentioned were eye witnesses to a significant degree for what they were writing about and though there are issues with each there is not a modern historian or a ph.d of antiquities out there that doesn't go by the same source material and disagreements over translations are not that vehement.
Yes, homosexuality in general was much more tolerated and even institutionalized in some respects - certainly the ancients did not think gay = sissy boy by any measure. Hollywood is no where near clever enough to get that distinction right since they are too concerned with selling popcorn to a modern and usually uneducated audience that would be predisposed to the usual modern stereotypes of gender, sexuality, etc.
For the record - the Spartans were a professional warrior society but they were very reluctant to engage in any battles unless they absolutely had to. That is why they arrived at the end of Marathon and why the Ephors did not want to send troops with Leonidas... also there were plenty of times when Sparta was actually an ally of the Persians. That definitely would be news to me. What ancient texts and archeological record that survived the ages are they privy to that the rest of the world is missing out on? You could say that is true of the perception of Philip and Alexander and the Macedonian's exploits but only so much survives from a hundred to five hundred to a few thousand years preceeding that... Herodatus and Thucydides are not called "fathers of history" for nothing...
