A suspicious item seized Friday morning from the truck of a contract worker at Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station turned out to be an apparent pipe bomb, plant operator Arizona Public Service Co. said.

The plant declared an “unusual event” and locked down the facility in response. The plant has several hundred contract workers on site working on upgrades.

APS said in a press release that the vehicle was removed from the security checkpoint, which is at least a quarter of a mile from the parking lot.





APS security, who check identification and search vehicles at the checkpoint, did not detect explosive material on the small, capped pipe, the company said. But the bomb squad from Maricopa County Sheriffs Office confirmed it was a “credible explosive device,” APS said.

Two elementary schools and a high school in the area were locked down briefly when a plant employee notified the district, Superintendent Robin Berry said.

“This is not a threat to the public,” said Jim McDonald, a spokesman for plant operator Arizona Public Service Co. earlier Friday. “If it had the potential to be, the security guards stopped it.”

Security guards working for the utility armed with automatic weapons check identification and search under the hood of vehicles entering the plant.

Sheriff's deputies were called, but McDonald could not say whether the worker was taken into custody.

The contract worker does not specifically work at Palo Verde but has been on site to do a job that the plant contracted with another company, 12 News reports. The inspection checkpoint is at least a half mile from the actual plant.

More than 3,000 people are working at the plant now, including several hundred contract workers brought in to help with upgrades on one of the three nuclear reactors, which make Palo Verde the largest power plant in the United States.

regardless of the details..the FACT APS Security is in charge of securing the USA's biggest nuuclear plant is somewhat scary to me.

APS security is like hiring the guy that stands at the door of a store and checks reciepts...i would think that in todays day and age the US would have a somewhat more military types guardng these high risk locarions...not rent-a-cop mental migets who couldnt pass the physical or mental test to join the real police force:2 cents:

anyone working at such a facility needs to be paid extra to be over zealous in policing themselves....you cant make a mistake like forgetting to takea small bomb out of your trunk

APS stands for Arizona Public Service. It is the company that owns the power plant. They hire their own private security people just like Raytheon does. Although they are not technically law enforcement, they are a bit higher up the food chain than "joes security service"

The security guards are not actually employees of APS - they are contractors who work year round there - and are managed by the security dept on site - normally supplied by wackenhut or its equivelent - and although they are trained to a much higher level than any "mall guard" or rent-a-cop (they actually have to maintain physical fitness and auto firearms proficiency) - they would be no match to someone with real military spcial forces training.

The story is complete BS though in that it leads you to believe that the plant site security checkpoint is like a last line of defense - there are two more checkpoints - one that includes every person and piece of material going through an explosives monitor - that are still some ways away from the actual plant and can easily detect even a 22 shell in your pocket or lunchbox - as mentioned here its just part of the "keep the dumb in fear" campaign
