Ex pats is the dollar going to force you to return?

I am getting killed on this exchange rate. Unless i can invest in this country I am going to have to return to the frozen North.

A 12 pack of Coca Cola is $7.91. My light bill is three times what is in the US and my cell phone bill is .67/minute. My maid is $450/month so that is cool but all the rest of this is killing me.

tranza 10-30-2007 01:04 PM

Everybody outside the US is getting killed with the current currency.

Deputy Chief Command 10-30-2007 01:07 PM

I am not .) all my money is in euro ! for me it is great . I can go to the USA and buy lots of ipods and other stuff at ridiculous prices !

BOSS1 10-30-2007 01:09 PM

Yeah by your other posts, i guess we are in a similar boat in that you live somewhere in the third world. I am in Brazil and our currency is so freaking strong it is brutal.

Tranza, but I have the option to just go back. I don't want to and the girlfriend might be a little shocked if i packed and sold the condo but i could.

Penthouse Tony 10-30-2007 03:41 PM

Hey slapass I need to talk to you. Can you hit me up on ICQ?

Ross 10-30-2007 03:52 PM

I wish I could move to the US! Thats where my girlfriend and I really want to be but its a bit hard getting Visa's! We're not giving up tho.

Pornopat 10-30-2007 03:54 PM

Never had so much fun in my life.
Income in euro's. Spending in dollars.

cykoe6 10-30-2007 04:01 PM

I have been thinking about moving back to the US lately. The local currency exchange rate for a dollar is .47. I would be richer if I lived in the US instead of this crappy third world country.

TidalWave 10-30-2007 04:23 PM

the USA screws us again

PornMogul 10-30-2007 04:25 PM

going outside of the us with dollars is rough, living in the us making dollars isnt nearly as bad.

Time to move home.

I am glad I am not in Canada right now that's all I can say.

Any Americans coming to the UK on vacation will get a big shock. Petrol is $2 per litre, cigarettes is like $10 per pack. Eating in restaraunts is expensive (if you're used to US prices)

I'm used to paying it so its not bad for us, but we went to Florida on holiday this year again for 3 weeks and you get used to spending your dollars and the low prices. As soon as I got home I took my girlfriend out for dinner and the bill was almost $160 without tip for two 3 course meals and 3 drinks each.

Not expensive for a nice meal, but when you are used to going to Outback and getting 4 fillet steaks with fries and 3 drinks each for the same price it makes ya think.

Big_D 10-30-2007 05:33 PM

Well romania is on the Lei / Ron but will be eventually moving to the Euro once other european countries get romania to their "level" Basicly all of them are investing in highways and all of that shit, but for right now my cash coming from stateside is only varying at about 20 lei from the norm.

Corleone 10-30-2007 05:55 PM

~ 10% income loss in 1 year.. yep its pretty fucked up

Don't think you have seen anything yet. As the dollar declines, oil prices will rise - same with all imports where a weak dollar is being used to pay for product. And... there sure are a lot of imports.

Bingo.

What most fail to realize is anything that is transported ie everything is priced higher to account for the higher gas prices and the resulting expense in transporting goods around. Remember back to what you paid for a gallon of milk one year ago versus what it is today for example.

The falling dollar is making imported goods more expensive as well so it's a doubly whammy there.

Throw in the real estate problems, the expanding debt of our nation, and the really big one... they are most likely going to tie the price of oil to euros soon. If this happens you better buy a gun because shit's going to head south real quick.

PS Have a nice day.

Thurbs 10-30-2007 11:45 PM

nikolina 10-30-2007 11:55 PM

Im doing well its pretty shocking before i use to get alot more since i am in australia and i get paid by clients in usd, its not as much as it use to be.

slapass 10-31-2007 12:29 AM

The whole thing seems out of wack. I wonder if the US will have to inflate or something to stabilize the dollar on the world market?

cheekycherry 10-31-2007 12:31 AM

The dollar is destroying me!

cheekycherry 10-31-2007 12:34 AM

When I started this business $100,000 used to get me £73,000... pretty good.

Now $100,000 gets me about £48,000.

Fuckin sucks.

Same deal in Brazil. First time here in 3/2004 was 3 reais for 1 dollar now it is 1.73 reais for one dollar. Almost 100 increase in the price of stuff..... OUCH!

crockett 10-31-2007 02:15 PM

I understand in a sense what you guys are going through, but why not do something about it rather than complain? You can always seek out income sources that pay in Euros. This way you can set up a certian % of your income in Euros rather than USD.

Hell I'm in the US and working on some templates for blogs and various CMS's that I'll be selling. Rather than sell them for $39 USD like everyone else. I'll sell them for 29 Euros.

I mean hell I'm in the US but still I plan to take full advantage of the higher Euro value. Things change, shit happens learn to work around it or just deal with it.

Not really. I am still doing ok, even with the excahnges.

My electric bill is about 100$ per month. Local phone is about 45$ water about 10. Gas is about 2.80 per gallon, and milk is about 3.60

a maid here will cost you 60$ a week. If she is live in, you can get them for less.

O MARINA 10-31-2007 02:29 PM

hi rabbit :)

Agree! Best scenario and same here :thumbsup

Does not really have much effect or a biz/personal basis when local currency or US $ is acceptable and any relevant amount of dollars can be immediately converted to Euros or GBP to avoid depreciation.

The net is global (webmasters can be as well) and there are plenty options for cushioning problems.

Oi

So if I am doing the math right

100K got you 300K Rs

You get 80K x2 for you and your girlfriend tax free for your hardship of living and working offshore.

If you were smart you left the 300k Rs in the bank and it is now worth $173,410.40 or a profit of over 73k in U.S. Dollars.

Not a bad deal giving the cost of living their.

Stop you bitching, relax, and sip on a cold coconut. Life is good :)

TyroneGoldberg 11-03-2007 09:05 AM
