How to keep your neighbors off your wireless network

I realized keeping people off your network from trying to hack the password is all in the name.

my network is now called "Trogan Virus Development Center"

Hehehe... That will keep them out.. :):thumbsup

crockett 10-29-2007 12:39 AM

mine is named "virus"

GrouchyAdmin 10-29-2007 12:42 AM

I used to love using names like "GOTHEFUCKAWAY", but I just turned off SSID broadcast, tied it to my MAC address, and change my WPA key every few weeks.

If someone still manages to get through that, I'll hire them for some grunt work. :thumbsup

Edit: setting a really strong key on a 'bogus' wireless with a standard name of "linksys", or "default" was fun to do in the old office. :1orglaugh

Sleazy I hope they do not have a spell checker, they may call your bluff.

Mine is called Closed Connection.

Yeah... that works for me, too...

Though I don't really bother changing the WPA key but maybe once a year. If someone's using my network, I'll figure it out sooner or later, and take care of it then... but until then, there's only one system on my network with admin access, so I don't see the point in wasting the energy.

Shaze 10-29-2007 06:49 AM

i use a radius server that passes authentication to accounts only setup on my Active Directory Windows server domain

gornyhuy 10-29-2007 07:26 AM

don't broadcast... lock it down...
Either I have stupid neighbors, or thats all it takes.

TSV 10-29-2007 07:44 AM

Love the ideas to scare off thieving assholes

peterk 10-29-2007 08:00 AM

lol good ideea

VicD 10-29-2007 08:04 AM

mine is called macfilter

pornguy 10-29-2007 08:28 AM

I never thunk of some of those names. But will be renaming mine soon.

pornask 10-29-2007 08:35 AM

lol, that is the most awesome of ideas. I have my broadcast turned off and never had any attempts to connect to it, however this sounds like fun. I'm gonna turn the broadcast on and name it some scary shit... that will at least put a smile on my fach each day :D

Andre 10-29-2007 08:35 AM

Why don't you just stop broadcasting that you have a wireless network. Just turn that feature off and no one will know you have one unless you tell them.

Gerco 10-29-2007 08:38 AM

Just use MAC address authentication. Screw the other stuff. Kind of hard to fake a mac address.

So, so, so wrong. It's trivial to sniff networks w/ no broadcasted SSID. Hell, the default intel drivers do this as standard [ie, most laptops]

Wrong again. It's a 2 second job to fake a mac address.

If you want to keep people out, you've got a few options

#1 - Let them in, but have your network VPN'd, so they can get on, but can't do shit.

#2 - WPA password of 63 characters. WPA keys have to be bruteforced still, with a 63 char password it becomes completely illogical to try to brute.

#3 - Let them in, but have an invisible proxy that changes all photos on all webpages to goatse [don't try this in the US, i'm sure you'd end up in jail for it]....

iamkathi 10-29-2007 08:47 AM

There are about 45 different wireless connections in my apartment complex ( I live right next to the Georgia Tech Campus). Mine is secured, but one that isn't is called Hrdcore Gay Porn Svr. The guy that has it tells me he has had no trouble with people using his wireless! I laugh every time I see that one.

LOL, I totally exploded on this one. Everyone in the room is staring at me like I'm a complete freak :1orglaugh:1orglaugh:1orglaugh

Violetta 10-29-2007 10:04 AM

one of my neighbours' net is called "virus infected network" lol...

tblake 10-29-2007 11:31 AM

I hope my neighbors don't read this thread. I enjoy their internet immensely.

czarina 10-29-2007 11:49 AM

very smart! But won't WEP enabling it solve the issue?

StuartD 10-29-2007 11:50 AM

I used to name my SSID to "denied".

I've even had friends come over, fire up their laptop and go "I tried to connect but it says I'm denied" even though they have a perfect signal :upsidedow

tranza 10-29-2007 11:56 AM

You mean TROJAN, not TROGAN, right?

tony286 10-29-2007 12:00 PM

I cant believe they try that hard to hack into a connection. Its so cheap.

fris 10-29-2007 12:02 PM

most people dont know how to configure their wireless, including big companies that leave their shit open

WEP can be cracked in literally under 30 seconds.
WAP, 63 byte key, and optionally VPN to network

Marshal 10-29-2007 12:05 PM

WEP is easy as shit to break in. You can fake MAC address in two seconds.

If you ask me go with WPA or WPA2. Personally I use WPA2 with MAC authentification and broadcast turned on. Feel free to break in! :)

LOL... great ideas there.

And, for the record, I think you'd be hard-pressed to get prosecuted for the goatse idea in the U.S... it is, after all, your network.

Elli 10-29-2007 12:11 PM

Hmm.. my wireless network is named after my neighbour's dog. :)

VTcash 10-29-2007 12:13 PM

mines called "looking for gay porn?" :-)

Sure, but what happens when someone complains that their kid saw goatse cos of you.. like the people who got busted for having sex in their own house w/ the windows closed...

CurrentlySober 10-29-2007 12:42 PM

I used to work in an 32,000 square foot adult swing club in LA
They used to have projectors playing porn on some of the walls...
Come the end of the night, nearly every disc ended up being stolen.

They decided to copy the originals and use the copys instead of loosing the originals... Naturally, the copys all got stolen too...

Then someone had the idea to change the writing on the blank discs, from 'sexy girls 3' (for example) To 'XXX Gay Twink Hardcore Male Buttfucking 12'...

The discs stopped being stolen overnight !
