Hey AMP -- (im assuming you have a car) -- could I get my car insured in Hawai'i rather than NJ if I only plan to use it here? I'm still a resident of NJ but I plan to declare Hawaiian residency in 8/03.

When I go back home for the holidays in December, I'm buying a 3000GT.

So there is no way I can get it insured here without residency? :(

Oh well. NJ insurance is $5500 a year w/ collision (NJ has highest auto-insurance in USA). I don't plan to get collision though so that $5500 will drop to something a lot more acceptable.

yeah.... you'll never get insurance here unless you claim residency. Plus, most mainland insurance doesn't carry over to the islands...... you can kill it with like a month extra to make the trip, but that's about it. You'll hafta get new insurance upon arrival.

Also... be VERY careful who you finance through and make sure to talk to them about the details of what you got planned.. alot of finance companies won't let you take a car off the mainland with a lein on it unless you got 12 months minimum payment history with them. So, unless you plan to pay for it in full.... your finance company could literally hold your car hostage for a year dude....

be careful, be informed, ask questions, and take no shit.

HAHAHAHAA Finance -- I tried to do that a month ago. Apparently I fell under the category of "makes too much money from self-employment but no tax returns and credit is too new" -- thus no loan.

I'm going to buy the car in full. Cold. Hard. Cash. (actually a check but you get the picture)

Ship the car across country by truck (those car carriers), then when it gets to Cali, ship it to Hawai'i by boat.

I would love to ship it by air but probably a bit above my budget :)

right.... but what I meant was, if you ship from Cali, you bypass the trucking part of it.... take the car to the port directly yourself, and ship it out for $905.... it still goes on an oceanliner, but you don't have all that cross country shit to worry about.....
