Great Twist on New York Strip Steak

I confess...the idea for this idea came from a steak I had at Applebees some time ago...but the "recipe" is something I just made up last night.

It really isn't a recipe at all...just a really easy way to spice up a steak.

Ingredients:

1 can or jar of mushroom slices
1 can beef gravy
Dash of cracked black pepper (trust me...this goes a long way)

Blue Cheese crumbles

New York Strip Steak (or any other steak for that matter)

How simple can this be...

Combine mushrooms, gravy and black pepper in a small saucepan and bring to a bubble...then just let it simmer for a few minutes.

Grill the steak. (I like to coat my steaks with an ample sprinkling of Montreal Steak Seasoning...and it works really well with this recipe)

When the steak is done...cover it with blue cheese crumbles. For me that means so much blue cheese that you can't even see the steak any more...lol. Then, using a slotted spoon, cover the blue cheese with mushrooms from the mushroom and gravy mix.

Now then...I also made some dynamite garlic/parmesan toast to go with it...and that was very simple also. Real butter works best...so coat your french bread with a heavy layer of softened butter. Sprinkle with a heavy coat of garlic powder (not garlic salt). Sprinkle with parmesan cheese...heavily. (I prefer freshly shredded parmesan...it has so much more flavor...but don't bother with the pre-shredded packs...they are barely better than the canned stuff). Lastly sprinkle with parsley flakes to make it look pretty.

I recommend baking instead of broiling, unless you like the parmesan to get crispy. Just keep an eye on it and when the edges start to brown, yank it out.

That's it for today...but watch your local cable network for the premier of "Bart's cooking for lazy dudes who like to make interesting stuff from whatever they have laying around". (I'm not sure if that will be the title...it's a little long..lol

I would go with fresh mushrooms rather than canned. But sounds good!

Canned mushrooms are gross

Fresh would be good :)

It is absolutely true that fresh sauteed mushrooms would be better...but keep in mind this is something I just made up on the fly one night...lol.

mushrooms suckass eww :(

Instead of that steak seasoning. try using kosher salt. Not toooo much. Sprinkle it on, and then rub it in a bit with your fingers, and then throw them on the grill.

man that sounds yummy.

I'm giving 10-1 odds that "ThatGuyInTheCorner" will soon tell us he marinates his steaks in poo.

purplehaze 10-26-2007 01:32 PM

mmmmm...that sounds good. i already do the bleu cheese on top of my steaks, but i'm gonna try the mushrooms and gravy as well. i want to go to the store right now...i think i'll try that tonight for dinner!

Sounds good. I wouldn't do it with a Ribeye, but for a more inexpensive strip or sirlion, that sounds about right.

Presented with a pretty sweet deal, I decided to go ahead and try Omaha Steaks for the first time, and expect a bunch of meat come Monday... will have to try something similar one night soon. Thanks for the idea. :thumbsup

come back and comment on those Omaha Steaks, please. I have tried steaks from similar vendor's but have always been dissapointed. Either the price is just ungodly...$20/lb or more...or they cheat on certain things like the hamburgers...making them from dogmeat or something.

uno 10-26-2007 03:53 PM

That would probably work with feta too.

I doubt these guys use dogmeat, lol... but sure, I'll make a point of putting something up here when I have a real opinion on the matter.

The deal was something like 4 strips, 4 filets, 4 pork chops, 2 stuffed soles, 10 potatoes, 8 hot dogs, 10 steak burgers, and cutlery and a cutting board for 75 bucks, with shipping... so I figured it was worth a try, since I've always been curious.

Honestly, I'm not expecting a whole lot, but maybe they'll surprise me.

all that steak-talk made me hungry :)

Is this a new idea to some people? Minus the Blue Cheese crumbs, thats how I've done for years.

A little extra flavor to add while sautee'ing the mushrooms is to add red pepper flakes and red wine vinegar. Smells like shit but goddamn does it taste good.

BlueDesignStudios 10-26-2007 04:25 PM

ok those steak pics are definitely making me hungry now!

born2blog 10-26-2007 04:31 PM

that does sound tasty and Montreal steak spice is by far the best!!

I was impressed by the filets, and the rest of the steaks...but they used the hamburgers to bump the weight of the whole package and they were really poor quality.

Mind you...I am not speaking of Omaha brand. Just another brand I tried.

Your deal does sound like a good deal actually. You are paying a premium for the meat...but that isn't bad if it is really good meat.

I look forward to your opinion after you have tried them.

Sosa 10-26-2007 05:25 PM

I actually really liked the Omaha Steak Hamburgers. Their steaks are pretty good as well.

Spunky 10-26-2007 06:07 PM

That sounds tasty..gotta try that next time

Hey, I'm not THAT bad! :)

Actually that sounds really nice as it is, but I would personally miss out on the blue cheese, but then, hey... Each to their own :)

CurrentlySober 10-26-2007 06:39 PM

And yes... I'm hungry too... FOR STEAK, OK? :)

StuBradley 10-26-2007 09:29 PM

I like to marinate my steaks in Italian dressing and a little Dale's. Too bad you can only find it down south.
