why is it "world" ?

arial 10-25-2007 07:48 PM

Because we Americans think all of our sports are the best in the world.

Porno Dan 10-25-2007 07:51 PM

The best players from all over the World compete in it.

aico 10-25-2007 07:56 PM

So Americans can find it on a map.

There is a rumor that it was started because it was sponsored by a newspaper called "The World" at first, but the truth is at the time there wasn't any other countries with organized baseball events and teams. They've kept the name, but it should be changed. The winners of the World Baseball classic are the true World Champions.

It is no different than when an NBA or NFL teams wins their championship and they call them the "world champions". I've always thought it was pretty arrogant.

Phil 10-25-2007 09:25 PM

well, NBA does the same as well as American Football? Thats just stupid.

The best baseball players in the world are in MLB, period. The cream of the crop from other countries come here to play baseball, and the only players that go overseas are our broken down veterans.

The same can be said of the NFL, although admittedly football is an American sport.

As a matter of fact, the same can be said of the NBA. The best foreign players come here to play, and the only players that go overseas are the players that can't make it in the NBA. Hmmm....

I would agree with you (for the most part) about baseball. The best of the best want to come here to play for many reasons including money. You can say the same about hockey. But the NBA, I'm not sure. I don't follow basketball all that closely but it seems like every time I do they talk about the rest of world catching up to the US really quickly as far as talent and skill goes. When it comes to football, the US is the only place it really is played like that. There is the CFL in Canada and for a while there was NFL Europe, but usually the only guys on an NFL team not from the US are the kickers.

I think that talk has died down a bit as far as the rest of the world catching up to us in basketball. We had a couple terrible showings in international play because we were putting together terrible teams that were often only the left overs after our first, second, third, and even fourth choices at each position declined to play. We were also playing teams that played together year round, while our international teams barely had a few practices together before taking the court. Now that Mike Krzyzewski is coaching our international team and we are getting commitments from better players, not to mention choosing better teams, I doubt we'll have much a problem in international play again...

That is true. It seemed like with the first Dream Team all the guys wanted to go and represent the country and prove how great they were. Now there are guys that don't go because of who the shoe sponsor the team is or because they want to have the summer off. I think if we make a strong showing and win the gold in the next Olympics it might show that while others are catching up, we are still the top dog in basketball.
