Iranians are not arabs?
Is that like a "a whale is not a fish" kind of thing?
j/k Seems like most people group them together with the arabs though, and some Iranians always get upset about it... Is there a genetical difference? I sure could not tell the difference between an Iraqi and an Iranian, look pretty similar to me, kinda like Norwegians and Swedes... |
I class them all the same as well

it's like saying japanese and chinese, they may look similar but language is completely different even though they share a similar alphabet. Religiously Iran is predominantly Shiite muslims whereas the rest of the arab world is mostly Suuni muslims, and they have been 'enemies' since the days of Iman Sharif. Iran also had a large Jewish contingency whereas most arab countries do not. Iran's history also typically begins around 500BC whereas arab history begins roughly around 300AD.

Wikipeda has a pretty good explanation of the few different ways someone is identified or self-identifies as an Arab, usually on the basis of genealogy, language or politics. Neither the Iraqis nor Iranians are Arabs in any sense of the word. Whether they look similar to each other to us,or whether they look vaguely similar to those that do call themselves Arab is another whole issue entirely

Both are mostly muslims now, but iranians have persian roots. The arabs invaded and conquered Persia in the 7th century. There is even an arab word that means "non-arab" used for persians: adscham. Well, they are indo-european aryans (which just means "nobles", btw), not arabs. |
