Loan Sharks

Lately I've been hearing so much about them lol. My one friend came up to me today asking for money because he owed a loan shark and was threatened the day before that he better have it by the end of the week. I really don't know whether to laugh or be worried for him. I never even realized that there was still loan sharks around, though I'm sure there is, just never thought anyone I knew would get involved with one.

Anyways I reluctantly gave my friend the money he needed 'cause I don't wanna see him all beat up and stuff.:1orglaugh

Anyways anyone have any crazy Loan Shark Stories?

StickyGreen 10-23-2007 03:52 PM

Good luck getting that money back...

ztik 10-23-2007 03:54 PM

I would just kick the loan sharks ass, problem solved?

GreyWolf 10-23-2007 04:07 PM

The main loan sharks are banks and financial institutions who dress themselves up in legalities and color brochures :winkwink:

Only knew one "loan shark" tho only met him a few times thru other contacts - but he was a vicious son of a bitch, despite he had plenty assets (at least over $30 mill - that we know of).

His speciality - tho he never got involved personally, was to dump his defaulters down a manhole (not sure it's the same terminology elsewhere - these holes in the road!) and pour gas down the hole and a match after it. Nice guy. These incidents were often news reports and was his method of reminding other borrowers that they owed him money.

He's in his 60's now and last time I saw him, he was in a supermarket toddling along behind his new "mail order bride" - obviously totally devoted and in love :winkwink: But... he's still a dangerous man and vicious if anyone defaults. Strange character.

Good luck getting your money back, there's a reason these types of people go to loan sharks, they're always struggling to make ends meet.

loan sharks,I got a letter today from my credit card company. They changed the agreement and the best part was if you are late with a payment or go over your credit limit. Your rate goes to 32.24%. Thats fucking crazy and there was a time you hit your limit you couldnt charge anymore, now they let you go over so they can bang you up the ass. its legal loan sharks.

Ironically the VISA CEO (or whatever his title is) had an interview a few years ago and openly admitted (can't remember the exact quote) but along the lines - "People may have their cards in order most of the time, but there comes a time in life where they will default and we earn from that" :winkwink:

It was an very "open" interview and he sure was not the best PR mouth for VISA. He also went on to explain they have maxed the personal card market and has little growth prospects in Western countries and heading eastbound to Moscow to entice "seniors" to have cards with offers of cheap meds and travel - till they default. The other target market where there is growth for them is in company cards.

I know I won't see that money, but I never did expect my money back, it's my friend so it doesn't matter, it wasn't that much money anyways.

I'll never pick money over friends. ...outside of business relationships lol

Evil E 10-23-2007 07:19 PM

He's probably into gambling or something. You won't see your money back. Don't ever give him money again.

I like him already. Good way to do business, keeps the customers in line. Wish I could bring myself to kill a few of my deadbeat customers rather than merely file suit against them.

Mine put that in there as well a few months ago, got it as a bill insert with my statements, its 9.9% as long as I pay on time, etc. But if I mess up, they fucking send it up to 39.8%.

Which is why I don't feel sorry for banks when they get robbed or fucked over or people overextend themselves and cant pay and file on them. With tactics like this, they make alot of their own problems. They bleed their customers dry and then wring their hands to congress saying people are stiffing them on thier debts. Cry me a fucking river, ya know?

Fizzgig 10-23-2007 07:35 PM

Payday loans, cash advance places are the new loan sharks.

ChargebackJoe 10-23-2007 07:42 PM

rowan 10-23-2007 10:54 PM

The important question is whether this was a once-off, or your friend is going to be in trouble again in 2 months time for exactly the same thing... did you discuss what the money was for?

shahab6 10-23-2007 11:44 PM

Why would you ever borrow mony from a loan shark?

Read again, it's not me lol I would never be that stupid, nor would I need to lol

& Hopefully it was just a once off type thing and my friend isn't to much of an idiot to go back. If he does I'm not helping next time anyways, that would just be pure stupidity, let him learn his lesson with a couple broken fingers.

Arkantiger 10-23-2007 11:59 PM

maybe he borrowed it cause he has a drug habbit or was behind in bills, still that is a stupid thing to do because there repayment % are high as fuck.. better to ask family and friends for a loan and repay them..

It is so easy to get a loan from Citi Financial I don't know why anyone would go to a loan shark. It is also easy to get one from Prosper.com.

GAMEFINEST 10-24-2007 11:13 AM

dont borrow money from loan sharks ...

Violetta 10-24-2007 11:17 AM

Owning the wrong people money, can be deadly... Serious stuff

ChargebackJoe 10-24-2007 12:08 PM

Toronto poilce are not yet as corrupt as other American cities (that changes as more crap enters the force), if he was threatened send him there.

TubeTitans_SusieQ 10-24-2007 12:27 PM

Well maybe if you lend him money, you'll realize y the Loan shark is after him???

G-Rotica 10-24-2007 01:20 PM

I went to a loan shark once. I was like..."Mom can I have $20?"

ShellyCrash 10-24-2007 01:37 PM

Well, I guess to your friend's advantage they probably won't kill him. You axe someone you'll never get your money back.

I'm surprised there are still loan sharks out there, with all the payday loan places and mortgage / refi scams. I'm sure the industry has taken a hit.

frostyimpressions 10-24-2007 01:56 PM

I just stick to my credit union for borrowing money and never own any credit cards. I don't swim with loan sharks.

ChargebackJoe 10-24-2007 06:01 PM

Not everyone has a house or a job. In fact most people that need money have neither.

Great comment Joe. Most young people have neither, and credit companies wont give out credit because we've yet to build any.. it's ridiculous.

Not so much anymore. They cut all of the bad credit people out of the site last I knew, and those are the people who stand to gain the most from a service like that. I think Prosper really made a bad choice with that, they did it for the PC reasons, like most companies these days...

The payday lending industry is extremely profitable. If I could stand dealing with customers directly long enough, I'd open a payday loan store. In 1 year, I'd be quite wealthy. Not hard when your interest rates on your loans hit 900% APY or more.

OG LennyT 10-24-2007 11:29 PM

Pay Day loan places are fucking loan sharks... glad I have my finances straight. I know a few people that have been fucked over by these companies...

I have lost friends.

"Neither a borrower nor a lender be;
For loan oft loses both itself and friend,
And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry".
