Ubuntu.. installed... Now what?

Ok, Ubuntu installed and has booted to a command line..

What do I do now?

I logged in and still at a command line... I thought this was spose to have a graphic user desktop?

Do I need to type some thing here?

ro8in 10-21-2007 02:09 PM

type this:

startx

and press enter.. You probally get some error and then the next step is figuring out how to solve it..

It cant start your graphic interface for some reason and thats why it boots into command line

:P

Gerco 10-21-2007 02:12 PM

Did some searching found this...

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

Running it right now... Once it's done Ill try the startx

ro8in 10-21-2007 02:15 PM

btw

If your beginner at Linux its better to take a distro Like Red Hat or Suse

They are the most compatible with all kinds of hardware out of the box :)

Gerco 10-21-2007 02:19 PM

Total linux beginner. Running this on an old Sony laptop. Seems to still be chunking away at the download of the last command I entered... something a little over a gig in size it said... seems to be installing a ton of stuyff.

ro8in 10-21-2007 02:23 PM

yeah the desktop system is pretty big..

Its based on loads of little applications..

Gerco 10-21-2007 02:25 PM

looks to be about 56% done with downloading and installing the desktop... keeping my fingers crossed.

gentoo 10-21-2007 02:42 PM

you must of accidently downloaded and install the ubuntu server install

Gerco 10-21-2007 03:32 PM

now when I type startx I ger the error,

Giving up
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to x server
xinit: No such process (error 3): Server Error

:(

Keep me updated... I'm doing a testrun 32 bit install on a 64 intel... and if that goes well a 64 install on an AMD...

Looking forward to ubuntu on a decent machine... I've older versions on older computers and loved em...

Gerco 10-21-2007 03:50 PM

ok... going to foramt and try again... maybe I installed the wrong thing.

Gerco 10-21-2007 04:00 PM

Ok, I see what I did wrong... when it asked me what it install I picked just plain old ubuntu... not ubuntu desktop, so I guess I installed the command line server version only? Well, I just finished formating and am doing the install again.. will see how this goes.

Gerco 10-21-2007 05:03 PM

Hmm... still the same issues... Just goto the command prompt... startx does not work... researching

Can't, I tried that, Downloaded it multiple times, even tried to create multiple burn images, first at max speed, second at 2x. the Machine will boot to the disk, but then when I try to do anything it just gives me a Disk I/O error.

On the other hand, XP installs flawlessly on it, even detects and installs all the correct drivers the first time... Doesn't look like Ubuntu is quite ready for the primetime yet.

qxm 10-21-2007 08:11 PM

I'll install ubuntu on a second HD this weekend ..... I want to get it working with VMware/vista somehow....

munki 10-21-2007 08:11 PM

Are you using 7.10?

I was having troubles with 7.10, and went back and searched teh googles for a 7.04 install and it worked flawlessly right off the bat.

This especially applies if you have ATI graphics...

qxm 10-21-2007 08:17 PM

7.10 doesn't work for me (ATI RADEON Card)......I had to download the 6.04 version and upgrade to 7.04 but since I was running vmware on the same OS virtual machine the PC got really sloooow........so I'll install ubuntu on a clean 20Gb HD and try to access my vista installation through VMware.......I'll see how that goes.......

Gerco 10-21-2007 08:26 PM

yup, version 7.10 here... not going to waste any more time on it.. This is a older 900mhz Sony laptop, XP installed fine on it, everythings working... going though the downloads of the service packs now.

No, you're just fucking retarded.

martinsc 10-21-2007 11:03 PM

walk through this (http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfec...top_ubuntu7.04) and you should be able to do almost everything that you can do with windows....
