Have social networking sites KILLED dating sites?

Every paid dating site, True.com, Match.com, eHarmony.com has plateaued or declined their membership since Facebook really took off.

Barefootsies 10-18-2007 01:05 PM

The dating sites killed themselves with fake profiles, spam, greed and that old ugly fuck on the commercials.

Also..

Masterchief 10-18-2007 01:54 PM

they killed themselves. right now it seems like their goal is to merely have them signup and pay only once. I bet they rarely ever rebill unless they forget.

Klen 10-18-2007 01:58 PM

Why the fuck should anyone pay for dating when you can get for free without problem.

Vendot 10-18-2007 02:22 PM

Facebook is definitely killing dating..... all we need is a GEO IP gallery of facebook users to send our traffic too.

Someone set up FaceBucks.com

And those exact same sites you listed spend huge dollars on social networks to get them back. They wouldn't keep renewing their media buys if it wasnt working...

LOL actually it's the reverse. They've collected traffic that can be upsold to dating sites :)

Video Rob 10-18-2007 05:55 PM

No. Social networking sites are full of kids that want to talk crap. REAL dating sites have people who are looking for relationships.

This was true. Dating used to account for a large part of the social network's revenue until now:

Quote:

THE NEW YORK TIMES -- Sep 14 -- The once prolific and sexually provocative TRUE ads are now conspicuously absent. Why? The dating site reportedly is delinquent on its advertising payments and has had to cut back. According to Mark Brooks, editor of Online Personals Watch, TRUE was looking at "considerable" seven-figure advertising bills from several major sites. "The amount of advertising they did, even in the very early days, was astounding. They were pricing everyone else out of the market," Mr. Brooks said. It is hoped that the easing of the company's aggressive advertising will restore some sanity to industry ad prices.
I think True alone spent over 100 million in between online and cable.

Eharmony spends a boatload on advertising in the "real" world, but they are a comparatively rare service that is promoting a marketable difference. They have a more or less unique system, and they play off of that.

Most of the current dating sponsor type sites are honestly so full of shit that even a newbie idiot can figure it out. Those who can't figure it out ahead of time usually catch on after the first couple of days and probably never rebill.

So many fake profiles, so many come ons, so much crap. Dating sites do themselves no favors. I am shocked that some of them haven't been sued, I suspect nobody wants to admit they were desperate enough to use one.

Drake 10-18-2007 10:39 PM

I don't think they are. I'm sure they have an effect, but dating sites are for a particular type of surfer. The person who uses Facebook or social networks to get dates or get laid is probably more of a hustler/player anyway, and if not, I wouldn't be surprised if they're also members of certain dating sites. The more he/she puts themselves out there, the better the chances of finding somebody - for dating or other activities.

Judging by his sponsor stats, I trust this man's input.

You think dating sites can control every single Nigerian that makes a fake profile?

I used to approve 5,000 profiles a day, yes...you look at female profiles with more scrutiny, however, shit slides in once in awhile.

the quality of the women is becoming suspect though.....

if you catch a brand new user...you might get some decent pussy

otherwise, you're looking at a fairly large base of sex addicts, girls who have had sex with 100+ partners in their life & got the herps

give me a myspace, or hi5, or facebook any day over plenty of fish

if I'm looking for a quick booty call with a trailer park girl though, POF is where its at........

trust me, i do more demographics in a week involving these sites, than most major dating marketing heads on this board....i also have the personal experience that rivals any man on this board

I have slept with (minimum) 35 women from plenty of fish this year alone.

And another 2 dozen + from myspace.

And 2-3 from hi5.
