2004 Mercedes 500 S Class - Good to buy?? Don't Want a Dodge

I heard that the newer mercedes are not as good as the older ones. I had a 93 500 SEL for years and it was great. But my mechanic tells me that the new merc are shit. Anyone have a 2004 plus can tell me how they are? I used to drive my 93 on weekends , it was a drop top and I love it but with 120 thousand miles I think it is time to go. Any info is appreciated.. thanks!!

sweetpurple04 10-15-2007 03:50 PM

yea you are right.. but i want the s class. the eclass comes with the 5 liter right?

egbiz 10-15-2007 03:55 PM

The new W221 S class is back on target. Benz stepped up their game and from what I have read is really a fantastic vehicle. '04 might be better than an '03 .. But that body style has had known issues. Do some research.

I would save the money, what are those '04's going for now..? 40-50k? Just get a '99 C43 AMG ..

The new S class design trumps the old one IMO so I'd stay away from the older body style. I have an SL500 and I'm hoping they dont redesign it for at least a few more years.

dodge used a lot of their pickup truck technology in those mercedes.....

I own two mercedes and they are always in the shop...same goes for most people that I know who own mercedes. Your mechanic is right, they are shit.

Direct from Mercedes maybe....you shouldn't pay any more then 35k from a used car dealer now....and that's for one in mint condition.

hell yeah.. or a mercedes BRABUS official tuner of mercedes next to AMG

egbiz 10-15-2007 04:27 PM

Brabus is the only Benz tuner I would even consider. Besides AMG obviously. But the new Brabus line kind of fell off as far as looks (The power is still there of course). Those new rims arn't that great.. The monoblocks are dope though

FreeHugeMovies 10-15-2007 04:35 PM

Only buy JAP.

why not Renntech? They are more "official" then Brabus is... I don't even know of any dealers installing Brabus mods, yet almost all dealers will install Renntech and still honor full factory warranty.

Not that I would use Renntech though, I'd go for Kleemann w/ evosport headers and pulley kit for the 55k engines

There are more lemon law filings against Mercedes in CA than all other manufacturers combined.

Stay away from the Jetta too. Not dependable at all.

I have a 2001 C320 Mercedes. Probably the least dependable car I have ever owned. Seems like every month there is some minor problem. These minor problems always cost an arm and a leg to fix. I have two seperate appointments this week for problems and service. Looks like another $1,500.00 week without a car.

I say stick with Honda or Toyota makes. Acura or Lexus on the high end. :thumbsup
