.com .net or dashes
Im trying to decide on a new domain and I need some help. If a .com is already taken is it ok to buy the .net and is the .com better and why. I have seen where people add dashes. Does this count against you in SEO? Which is better and why? Is a simple .net with the right keyword domain all I need? Please enlighten me.

Purely SEO wise: A .net is best in your case.
For ranking in the SERPS, .net or .com doesn't matter. Even a .org would be fine. .info, .biz are a little tricky, since many spammers use them because they are cheap, google seems to have less tolerance towards shit on a .info than on a .com, .net or .org. I personally hate dashes since they only have disadvantages (key1-key2.com will often only rank well for a "key1 key2" search, while key1key2.com will rank well for "key1key2" and "key1 key2" searches). So, dashes can make sense for search terms naturally searched with a space between them, but they don't have any advantages over non-dash domains, well, sometimes it looks better and is easier to read, but not SEO wise. |
i would say that unless the .net extention makes sense with your domain i would go for the dashed version..

If you want a .com: SOLOGIRLNAMEfan.com, SOLOGIRLNAMEvids.com, mySOLOGIRLNAME.com (just examples, you get the idea) are fine as well if you want to rank for SOLOGIRLNAME.
