The exorcist theme

Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" is a great piece of music aside from the fact many people are most familiar with a short version of it from "The Exorcist".

It is haunting, melodic, ethereal, at times melancholic, and other times uplifting. In short the full piece is quite epic.

If you have the time, check out this 3-part video of Tubular Bells filmed and recorded live in 1973:

NOTE: Get comfortable with your favorite drink or drug, and get ready for a long trip (it's over 20 minutes long)...

If you think that is long, the original album version clocks in at nearly 50 minutes.

What is special about this version is the cast of musicians - Fred Frith, Steve Hillage, and Mick Taylor (the guy Ron Wood replaced in the Rolling Stones), all masters of their instruments, and musician's musicians.

BTW, Oldfield recorded the original album with himself playing most of the instruments. It was also the very first album released by Virgin Records.

My parents bought me an 8-track for my car when I was a kid. The first time it clicked tracks in the middle of a song, I knew the 8-track as a format was doomed.

Speaking of Quadrophonic, I had a really cool Marantz quadrophonic amplifier back in the day - used to love playing Quadrophenia (by the Who) on it.

To get this thread back on "track" (although I sense that it has already jumped off the tracks), check out Sisters of Mercy doing "This Corrosion".

Another really good misfits inspired horror punk band is Calabrese out of Phoenix. If you can find the track "Midnight Spookshow", grab it. It's on their 13 Halloweens CD and a handful of comps floating around. It's good stuff. :thumbsup
