I see nice wordpress sites poping up with "Free download templates"
Has anyone see any traffic skimming scripts in them?

i use a few free templates and none of them skims any traffic. They do put up some default content (sidebars, first post, etc...) that has their affcode, but these are easy to remove. And most of them ask to leave a link to their sites on the very bottom.
I was paranoid at first and scanned every single file of the theme, but i was pleasantly surprised... maybe there are still a few honest people out there...

What templates are you talking about? I've never seen this happen.

Free adult wordpress themes. No skim, scripts, etc.. just the (c) design link at the very bottom :)

I've never seen any template using skimming, most free templates are done for link popularity, since they want you to keep the link(s) in the footer. It's a pretty good way to get a buch of backlinks.

It's very common in mainstream to sponsor themes, you pay and get a footer link in a theme, price depends on popularity of the theme author.
