I need a new computer.

I have been working from my 2.8 GHz laptop for the past six weeks and it's really starting to drive me crazy. I want to build a computer but I have no idea about compatibility and everything in those regards... who can help me piece together a system that will work great and is for a great price? I am willing to pay for the help.

Speed is important, memory is important, cooling is important, hard drive space is good but not incredibly essential, though a redundant set up may be a nice idea. I will not be gaming from this computer so a high-end graphics card is not needed. I'm also wanting a 24 inch LCD. I'm thinking Windows XP.

Where do we even begin?

Sly 10-13-2007 04:53 PM

Nobody has input?

Axeman 10-13-2007 04:59 PM

Not sure, but I will be right behind you I think. My current desktop is starting to crawl these days. Gotta get a new monitor as mine just kicked the bucket yesterday. Might be a good time to replace both.

FredIsMe 10-13-2007 05:01 PM

Mac Pro with Boot Camp

Pretty much your only choice if you want to be able to configure what you get. Otherwise there are plenty of other options where someone else has made the choices for you.

BOSS1 10-13-2007 06:52 PM

I need the same thing as well

oh thats right... I guess a real machine would fuck him up huh?

MAC all the way baby....

Diligent 10-14-2007 02:32 AM

To Sly, and those reading who want like a bit of consultation in *PC* building:

Shoot me an email with what You prefer the machine to be based upon,
like Sly did in his post, and we can go from there! :)

You'll have to have someone around for the assemblying, and point me to an online PC store of choice (if You have one, I'll pick one in case not).

mike{at}BrokerTitan{dot}com

I have a decades experience with hardware, and can help with the customizing.
$50 per person & "project" will do fine, to be payed via PayPal.

Regards,
Mike

build your own, it is the only way

i couldn't imagine buying a machine from a big company, you can get twice the machine for the price you pay with dell, etc...

That apple looks good:2 cents:

Once you go Mac you never go back.

GreyWolf 10-14-2007 04:10 AM

Decent case (with plenty wind blowing inside), all generic (replaceable - no bullshit branded crap) parts and 30 minutes to build it. Next!

And no Mac shit :winkwink:

Wilbo 10-14-2007 04:29 AM

Go to Newegg.com to buy the parts and assemble it yourself. There is no magic to building a computer and is easy. I recently built two of them with no experience and found it to be fairly simple and straightforward.

Had one for a few days. Took the piece of shit back to the store and bought a computer instead. Never cursed so much while trying to get work done in my entire life.
