WHAT do you do with your OLD hard drives??
 

My hard drives are piling up, when I throw out a PC I take out the hard drive for security reasons, now I have 8 of them in my closet, both internal and external.

Hit a very large nail through them. Thats what i do.

You can buy "bulk tape erasers" at radiosnack still probably. Remove the platters from the case and degauss the fuck out of them, each side, then smash em and throw away a few random pieces each week until gone (lol).

Make clocks out of them. A hard drive with it's cover off makes a nice clock for anyone's geek room. Pick up clockworks at a craft store.

We bought a case of external enclosures. Any time we have a spare HDD it get's dropped into a case and added to the network.

I keep them as back ups

send them to the mythbusters

Same here on the salt. I break all the data pins out, rip off the gold cable to the drive and soak it overnight in salt water. I am sure some one could get data off it, but it would be a whole lotta work.

I send them to the U.S. Department of Justice.
they seem to really dig on that stuff.

Have you ever played with the Neodymium magnets out of those things? Super powerful. DO NOT GET YOUR FINGERS BETWEEN THEM. I take the hard drive apart and steal the magnets..saving up to build a big wind turbine alternator. http://www.otherpower.com If the motor still works, it's a cool thing to salvage as well.

Your hard drive is sealed from dust, once you open it and anything touches the platter it's almost guaranteed useless. So it's pretty easy to take the next step and destroy the platter if that's what you're into.
