on several mainstream boards people are crying for loosing positions for selling links (or buying). I read on a blog somewhere that google handpicks who to punish - for now.
if you buy or sell links - do it smart....

Yep. First place to start is TLA and DP. I guess, just don't be so obvious about it. The best linking is A>B>C type linking anyway.

i think it's time to take it even a step further... not to link from menus, sidebars, footers, linkpages... but from within the content. This could be pretty easy if we are talking about blogs (just mention a post on another blog, mention the blog, or whatever) but with sites that might be a bit difficult.
Google knows that everybody does a-b-c nowadays. It's only a matter of time until these kind of links get punished or lose their value. :2 cents:

It has pretty much always been that way. That is why I have been encouraging people to use trackbacks, but most are too lazy I guess.

RE A>B>C i agree with you specially if it's obvious and also if its very repetitive. However, I do see it being very effective in large site network environments specially if it involves many differing Class C IPs.

I agree on the effectiveness... for now... google's algo gets better from day to day. I think it's only a matter of time until google will totally ignore (hopefully not punish) link trades of any kind. I am pretty sure that a link within the content is worth more than 10 a-b-c links - no matter how well they are planted on different IPs. :2 cents:

Well the bottom line really is that they have to constantly change the system because people are always trying to manipulate the system.

If they never changed then the .biz spammers would still own all the top SERPS.

Exactly.

Plus they have been saying this for years. Where the fuck have some of you people been? Matt Cutts of Google has been saying stuff like this at webmaster conferences for what must be two years now.

People still buy links. But if you actually buy RELEVANT links, or you are a high roller with Cutts and crew, you are not punished.

If nothing else, cruise an occasional webmaster board other than GFY..
