Not enough - That's for sure.

The days of making big money with porn are over.

There are too many amateurs out there giving porn away.

They don't know how to market and don't understand the f "tease".

I agree. I make a good living, but I would probably make a GREAT living in another job with the hours I put in. I started in this biz back in 1989. Back then any idiot could make a killing in this business. The problem is that I'm still an idiot, but times have changed. I'm having to increase my skills each year in order to keep up.

You folks giving away so much free content is the problem I believe. Ya, everyone wants to be a pornographer now, and it's much easier to do these days than it was years ago, but I am always having to give my members a reason to join my sites when they can get their porn fix for free. I shoot my own content and it's unusual so that really helps.

Content is getting cheapened by everyone giving away so much. As a result, it's taking more and more extreme content in order to get a customer to join a site.

I provide my customers with the unusual, but I fight the urge to give away too much free like so many people do. A good friend of mine who has a very successful site (several thousand members) tells me that "you can never give away too much free stuff." I can't argue because he's making more money than me, but I sure don't agree. He has tons of pictures available for free on his tour and tons of forums and the like with more free shit. I just can't do it. I spend a lot of time, money, and effort shooting content, and I just find it hard to "give away". If you look at many of my sites you'll notice that they's very little nudity unless you "pay". Customers should have to pay to see that. Many of my models like that too. They like the fact that not every Tom, Dick, and Harry will see them nude. Instead only serious and paying customers who demonstrate they appreciate the nude body by paying will be able to. That excludes their parents, teacher, boyfriend, etc.

Had a model call me crying once about her boyfriend who was upset that she had posed for me. He had seen her pictures on the Internet and was giving her a hard time about it. She felt completely different when she hung up the phone though as I got her to understand that SHE should be the one upset because not only is her boyfriend looking at porn, but paying for it which is how he saw her sets at my site. This guy must be seriously into porn I explained to her! :321GFY She called him, told him off, and broke off their relationship!

I strongly believe that most of the members at "some" of my sites are boyfriends that joined only to see if I fucked their girlfriend yet. I use to provide a one picture preview of each and everyone available at all of my sites. I stopped because boyfriends were watching some of my sites to see if their girlfriends would appear (hey, I can't help that your girlfriend is a whore). I changed my templates so that now only the last 20 or so updates are previewed. Membership went up drastically and has stayed up. If the boyfriend wants to see if I fucked their girlfriend, he'll have to pay me!

Ok, getting off topic.

aidantrent 10-06-2007 10:17 PM

As everyone who's *honest* will agree, there's very little money to be made in TGPs/blogs/free sites/etc. these days. As some of the above posts point out, there's a lot of free content available these days, but I think they're missing the point. The amount of material available isn't the issue--it's the lack of imagination.

What do new people in this business do? Oooh! Oooh! Blog! Or maybe an MGP. And then a TGP. They stay up for a year, maybe two, until the domain expires. Then they're gone. Seriously, read some of last year's GFY threads. Look for all of the 'check out my new site!' posts. Go check them out. If the domain resolves at all, it's almost certainly pointing to a SEDO page now. Those webmaster's finally realized that mimicking a successful business model is not enough: you need to set yourself apart. Sites like The Hun and Pink World make serious money because they were first and they got the majority of traffic during the dot-com boom. Their popularity means that most new surfers are going to find them quickly, whether via search engines, links, or word of mouth. Trying to take those customers away by offering the same style of site (usually with inferior links, such as TGPs of FHGs, usually all of the same set of models) will never work. You need to provide a new service, something that surfers haven't seen before! It doesn't have to be ground-breaking, but it does need to be on the leading edge. I've been doing quite well with EveKnows, even though AskJolene is the undisputed leader of adult searching. Why? Because the market isn't saturated yet! There are *very* few good porn search engines, so there's room for a newcomer to break in and build up a solid userbase. Compare this to TGPs, where there are hundreds of high-quality sites and thousands upon thousands of mediocre ones. Highly-specific niche TGPs, MGPs, and blogs still probably have some potential, but don't kid yourself about your new Teen Babe Wonderland site. It's been done by scores before you, most of them probably looked better than yours, and they've all failed.

So, here's my advice: be creative. Remaking a popular mainstream site as an adult site may work for the first few people on the bandwagon, but it saturates quickly. I doubt you're going to do well with an adult YouTube clone anymore--you're a couple of years too late. New blogs are a few years too late. TGPs are *several* years behind. Be creative! Do something exciting!

There's certainly still money to be made in adult, it's just going to take some imagination to make it happen.

Best of luck!

martinsc 10-06-2007 10:35 PM

what do you mean "make a month"? people get payed for this????
;-)

jonesonyou 10-08-2007 01:03 PM

If you want to make money, talk to me. I'm no vetran, but I am here to help you help me... :2 cents:

tomwil 10-08-2007 06:58 PM

There is money to be made! The real question is how much. When I first got into this biz I was trying to make enough money to pay my $500 student loan bill every month. Now, after FOUR years I make at least five times that! That's five times more than I hoped for from a "hobby"!

The key to making money is time!!!! Most people quit within six months to a year. One year is not enough time to see the fruits of your labor. When I was a year in the business I was only making about $50 a month and was as happy as a pig in shit. My joy came from the fact that I could make money doing something I love and the realization that if I could make $50 then $500 was possible, and if $500 was possible then $1,000 was possible, etc.... I expect to double my earnings within the next year (then no more real job!!! LOL).

My advice to you is to find as many revenue streams as you can. For me that meant dealing with affiliate programs AND creating my own content!!! Most newbies can't afford to produce and those who can will stand out from the rest of the pack. If you decide to create your own content you must make it available to as many venues as possible (DVD, VOD, paysites, etc....).

Now, when it comes to marketing do all the standard shit you see in these forums, e.g. TGP/MGP, banner links, link exchanges, link list, blah, blah, blah.....but don't ignore "the real world". Don't be afraid to actually "print" a real ad in a "real" publication, like your local escort magazine etc... Think about it...some dweeb is about to spend $200 for real pussy! You can save him $180.05 by giving him the option of jerking off viewing your paysite. LMAO.

mx8829 10-08-2007 07:21 PM

Its all about how you position your self. The current trend is user generated content. Not everything has to be hardcore porn. Why not make a little chat site with live housewives showing their tits :). You have no idea how many fat women and fat guys will pay top dollar :)

Wow, I wasn't expecting to see good posts in here, I thought it would just be a bunch of people making up their monthly income, or stating that they aren't going to reveal it.

This business is a tonne of work for sure. I think the key is that you have to really love what you are doing. It isn't worth it otherwise. It takes so much time and effort to get ahead in the game that the people who are just looking to earn money will fall by the wayside.

Man, I think there is no answer to that question, but the range is quite big. Some people squeak by, or make enough just to cover their beer tab, while others seemingly make tens of thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) per month on a single site. But the stories are all the same, it used to be sooo much easier to make a killing. It was that way when I entered the fray, and it appears to get more and more difficult as we go along. But don't be discouraged, there's always going to be money in porn.

Now as for the video share porn sites (ie adult versions of youtube) some people want to crucify these sites as giving away too much free porn. There is some truth to that, but what can you do? Stop it? Ain't gonna happen, so you need to adjust and leverage these new tools. Thats what they used to say about TGPs and MGPs, but the industry is still strong, only changing.

I see it in a positive light. At least now you can upload your trailers and know that they will be seen immediately. It used to be that TGPs/MGPs ruled the google-sphere, and you were at the mercy of some administrator with stringent rules on his/her TGP site. One extra link on your gallery, and you would not get shown. Everyone's been turned down at least once on thehun.

Anyways, my $.02

That's not true. All you need is a killer idea as "aidantrent" mentioned before. Be original! Of course you can still make $$$ if you're the second/third/.. site with this new idea but still..

What's not true about this? The question was "how much do you make a month off a porn site?". I replied the range is really broad, from making no money (or even losing your butt) to making vast sums. What's wrong with this answer? I don't disagree with aidantrent at all. On the contrary, he's right! I'm not discouraging anyone who wants to get in, it's a big pie. Just thoroughly think and investigate before you move on your idea.

It may very well happen if they pass the 2257 changes that they want to make.

To me, this is no diffence then any other type of business. Look at fast food.
There's only a handfull of national chains that are still around. But there are tons of little franchises that don't extend the state they reside in. If people focus, I think there's money to be made.
A million people can copy mcDonalds, it doesn't mean they are going to make it.
Still, it seems to me that everyone should create at least one TGP, MGP, or link site.Whatever. You need to learn from somewhere.
I just started so I don't know shit. Just observations.

Chimera1 10-28-2007 03:33 AM

I doubt anyone will give you firm $$ figures. I know I will not. I make enough maybe even a little bit more than enough.
What you make though is not going to be the same as me or anyone else it will depend on you.
There is money in p0rn there is money in anything, it all depends on how hard you are willing to work and how much thought you will put into it.
I agree that the same old tired templates and tried and true methods don't make what they used to.
That is when you begin to look around and begin trying new approaches.

Hey bro, any good advice is welcome. Lemme know where the big bucks are. I mean with paco touching Alexa 7500 with no effort, you'll think I'd be coasting around town in a pink caddy with some hoes instead if pushing around my '89 Corsica.

The only keeping this site from skyrocketing even further is the excessive bandwidth cost. But people love their free porn.

Actually I'm having some dude do a layout change with some css modications. Lets' hope that works out.

tiramisu 10-29-2007 06:47 PM

To be honest, I am making a decent living. I had the same experiences with one of the guy who spent 4 years trying to survive in this biz. Yes I invest 4 years, first month I made less than one hundred dollars to now a decent living. You need to put alot of time to learn and understand how this online adult biz works. But if u want a tip, I can tell you one ONLY thing "Traffic* No matter how good you are a gallery submitter, or free site builders. One thing to keep in mind is to have your own traffic network. And reinvest most of your earning there. Build up more traffic, open more sites. Soon you will find out if u rely on other people traffic, one day you gonna end up with nothing. And also I read somewhere that only 2 - 5% of webmasters making a living online, the rest come and go or lose interests. Be sure to spend alot time to build your own traffic for yourself.

leftsans 10-30-2007 05:58 PM

Well I'm going to sound like a lying asshole but I am a counter example to the general tone of the thread. I had breathtaking success almost as soon as I started this summer. I am an experienced internet marketer but I had never done porn. I tried dating affiliates for about a month, but some news feeds I was auto-posting started to draw a ton of traffic so I put up some relevant posts linking to affiliate programs.

It was immediately very successful. I had 145 signups the last 3 days of the month I started. I had well over 500 signups for the months following that. From just one site. I was trying to build content for it very fast so I was working a lot, but the compensation was incredible.

I swear to you this is true and I'm sure I'm not the only guy ever to do this. I'm still no expert at anything about this game but the only advice I could give was to do your homework and spend time doing niche research. I always read "at the beginning, choose niches you are interested in" and I'm sorry that's wrong. I guess it is based on the idea that you wont get bored with your lack of success and quit. Tha sounds like porn is a hobby and it seems like for most of the people here it is definitely a business. If you want to make money do something you have reason to believe will make a LOT of money, you will probably find making money more interesting than looking at lots of porn and not getting paid.

esteve 10-30-2007 09:29 PM

the guy with uporn must be happy

koalat 10-31-2007 08:09 AM

As with most entrepreneurial ventures the only thing that's going to determine your income and success is your ability to market. How much other people are making in this business is really irrelevant.

Some people are making a fortune, others aren't going to be able to make a dime. :2 cents:

livegirlsonbed 10-31-2007 09:05 AM

The new comers in the fist year don't make more than 100 bucks per month.
with a new domain/s , a new site/s is hard to get more traffic,,,no traffic no money..
After the first year the revenue is a bit bigger 100-500$ /month or more depend of the promoted niches and the sites. At this time the porn industry is very competitive, with just 1-2 or 3 new sites is very hard to make money!

In my opinion the porn revenue is not stable,,are months when a site can to generate 2-3k$ and months when the revenue is up 100-200$... but is a good making money machine as part-time job!

testpie 11-04-2007 09:06 AM

On average, I make around $0 per month.

SlutFuck 11-08-2007 10:07 AM

I personally think that making decent money in the adult sector is very very difficult.

My site is less than a week old and i am making about $2-5 per day with a fixed CPC affiliate. See my sig for the link.

I also think that AVNAds.com can earn you some money, in the first 2 days I made about 0.40c per day with them.

mainah 11-08-2007 01:46 PM

Pocket change

Good thing I have a day job. I made about $500 last month from 2 sites with about 9000 unique visitors/day combined. But the cash is surely and slowly going down even as my # visitors goes up - most of the income is now from rebills and I'm getting fewer new signups with every passing week. I was wondering why that was - my suspicion was that there's too much free porn, as many others here have noted (and I readily admit to probably giving away too much free content myself). So I put up a poll on my primary site asking visitors why they weren't ponying up some cash for a subscription. Not too many replies so far, but here's the current results.

I'm satisfied with all the free porn on the Internet, no need to pay for it. 35.0%
Quality, quantity, and price are fine, but I'm broke. 25.0%
I want videos, not photos. 17.5%
Price - quality & quantity are good but the price is too high. 15.0%
Quality - photos aren't good enough. 7.5%
Quantity - not enough photos. 0.0%

Total votes: 40

Apparently not too many people are willing to answer polls either, as only 40 have responded out of 50,000+ visitors since the poll went up. Too busy jerking off maybe.

Very good post, I liked that. That really seems to be the truth. People have been complaining about things getting bad since I joined the industry in '05. But now, it does seem that even the people you'd least expect to here complaints from, are complaing how bad thigns are as well. This year sounds like a major downfall for many. Of course, some guy will post after me saying he's got a 1:30 ratio. But that is not the average, and most likely is a good at PPC marketing.

Just out of curiosity, is this ratio from TGPs? I'm getting 1k daily uniques to my solo girl blog, and not seeing very much revenue from it. I make about 1 sale per month right now. So blogs must be the new TGPs now. As far as ratios go. I guess the only way to survive now, is to have mass amounts of traffic. And that can take time.
