Well I did it....I moved to Mexico (pics)

I've been pretty MIA the last month or so (not that anyone noticed :winkwink:), but it's all for good reason. As soon as I got back from Burning Man, I packed whatever I could carry with me and got on a flight to Playa del Carmen, MX. For those that dont know about it (I hadn't even heard about it until last March), it's a small European tourist town, south of Cancun and directly across from Cozumel. I have some friends living in Cancun, but there's way too many loud drunk Americans for me to be able to stay there for an extended amount of time. So once I got there, I didn't have an apartment picked out yet, as not many people here post listings online. So the first thing I did was found a cheap hotel and then just started roaming the streets looking for Rent signs. And about 5 days later, I ended up finding a pretty nice 2bdr place a block away from the beach with an ocean view from my bedroom window. It's at the very top of what I wanted to spend per month, but Im going to be shooting in all the rooms and I know I'll make the money back.

So now I'm living in a place where I know no one and don't speak the language (it's been a long time since High School Spanish class...but I'm relearning)...but I couldnt be happier. Before this, I was living in Los Angeles for the last 4 years, and it really sucked the life out of me. It's a filthy city, where everyones an asshole and everything is way overpriced for what you get. Playa, however is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. And the women are just as amazing....Italians, French, Columbians, Brazilians, you name it. My rent here is comperable to some parts of LA, but being so close to the beach, I'd easily be paying 3x what I am now. And food is an assload cheaper, so thats a big plus too. Plus I figure this is something that I really should do while Im still single and childless...so wtf, right?

But now that I finally got settled into my new place and my internet hooked up, its back to work. I can't do any shooting right now since my Rebel's busted, but will be picking up a 40D when I come back to the states later this month. Plus I just have my laptop here right now...I can't figure out a fuckin way to get my 24" iMac down here. The import taxes are crazy if I bring it in the box, and a pro travel case is about $600, so I'm kinda at a loss. If any of you world travelers have any tips on bringing/shipping desktops abroad, I'd love to here them.

Here's a few pics I've taken in the last couple of days:

My Apartment Complex:

And finally the beach club a block away from my apt:

So if any of you smut-peddlers are ever planing to take a trip to the Yucatan, hit me up if you wanna hang out. There's lots of good lounges and clubs here and they mostly all play trance (as do some of the beaches), so if thats your kinda thing...come check it out.

Oh well...back to making casting flyers and biz cards. One. :321GFY

Really nice spot. Good move (for now).

Gina Cochina 10-05-2007 04:46 PM

Wow, beautiful view! My husband and I want to move to Mexico. We are lucky in that our parents are Mexican citizens, so we qualify for dual citizenship, which means we can buy houses for cheap and don't have to move into complexes geared toward Americans. We can actually own the house and the property the house is on, which US citizens can't do. Good luck with your Spanish! I spent a couple of days in a Mexican hospital recently, which I've since learned is a really good way to brush up on your Spanish quick! Uh, not that I'm recommending you do that...

MikeVega 10-05-2007 04:51 PM

that looks great. if i was single I'd move around a bit. I always love Mexico

FreeHugeMovies 10-05-2007 04:52 PM

How much USD is something like that? A round price, don't want to get too much into what you paid for it.

RevSand 10-05-2007 04:59 PM

Very cool.. Congrats.. I have thought of just doing something like that at times..

Any US citizen can have Dual citizen ship with Mexico if they want it. It will just take them a little longer than you. And yes they can own a home and property just like you can, only they need a bank trust. the bank holds the title in the persons name and they can do with it what they like.

Spunky 10-05-2007 07:10 PM

Thanks a lot for the tips! I've heard one other story about some heat coming from shooting models in MX. I don't know if you were shooting the local Mayitas or tourists, but I'm going to stick with tourists for the time being...go mostly after the Euros and Latin Americans. They're not as naive as the locals and should know what they're getting themselves into. I definitely will be cautious though.

And thanks for the computer tip too. I'll definitely have to give it a shot.

I haven't gotten to do any fishing here yet, but it is a fishing town so I want to check that out for sure.

And feel free to hit me up if you ever come back around the way. :thumbsup

You can get apartments for pretty much any price down here. It mostly depends on how close you are to the beach and the strip with all the clubs and shops. I'm right next to both and the prices around my neighborhood are anywhere from about $1200us/mo to up to about 2k/mo and up. Before I found this place, I called some others that were new construction (mine is probably about 10 years old) and further away from the beach and they were asking around $1500 for them.

I've had a lot of people tell me that about being single. So I wanted to make sure I actually did it before it was too late. And now that I've done it once, I'm already thinking about where to go to next. :winkwink:

My parents just retired and moved to Mexico. Baja, but there is a rash of robberies, car jackings and kidnappings lately. The police don't have such a good reputation. How is it down South there in Cancun area?

VicD 10-06-2007 09:20 AM
