Built myself a new desk... [pics]

I took a few days off last week and built myself a new desk. What do you guys think?

I added another middle shelf where the UPS is, and cut holes to run all the cables, but this is essentially it:

Yep... I used to work in live theatre so I have lots of carpentry experience.

It's flat cut oak plywood with solid oak trim. I finished it with satin varathane and a foam brush.

LilBro 10-05-2007 08:07 AM

very nice work!!

out of curiosity, what would something like that cost to buy from a store? if you had to guess... I am looking to get a new desk : ) not sure i could make something like that but i definitely could buy

BuggyG 10-05-2007 08:08 AM

it's toooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo clean
i'd feel out of place with it

pornguy 10-05-2007 08:13 AM

Very nice looking, and you should be proud of yourself for the work. I would be.

The nicest desk I have ever seen was one that a guy made from corian. that fucking thing weighed about a ton, but it was so cool to see it with no seams.

Emil 10-05-2007 08:15 AM

looks good, but do you have enough room for your arms?!?

CurrentlySober 10-05-2007 08:19 AM

Nice work... Makes a pleasent change fronm the 'Flat-Packs' I normally use :)

D 10-05-2007 08:21 AM

Nice.

My only concern would be air circulation down there... for the hardware... and the _hardware_. :winkwink:

Just the materials cost around $600. Not sure about buying one. You could hire a cabinet maker to build one who could probably do an even better job.

I wanted to lower the keyboard to make it all more ergonomic. It's much more comfortable like this than my old desk.

I've been thinking about this... I may need to put in a little fan before next summer, but so far it's fine. The hardware is running around the same temp as before. ;)

Yeah, I'm going to keep it natural. It has three coats of satin Varathane, four coats on the top.

I don't have very good tools here (no chop saw, no rad saw, no table saw) so it took about 40hrs. I did take a few boards to rip on a table saw I had access to.

Most of it was done with a crappy circular saw.

beta-tester 10-05-2007 09:41 AM

looks great man!! Good job :thumbsup

DateDoc 10-05-2007 09:53 AM

Nice desk. If I built something like that I'd end up with a pile of firewood! :Oh crap

Jimmy Rock 10-05-2007 09:54 AM

very cool, gives me Wood@!

gornyhuy 10-05-2007 11:35 AM

I dig the under desk shelving - I could use some of that.

dav3 10-05-2007 11:42 AM

Great desk Bob Vila!

The cables are killing me though. Pick up some velcro tape, it's awesome for tidying up the wires.

That thing is almost 10 years old and simply won't die. I've only ever had to replace the toner cartridge once. I said a couple years ago, when the toner runs out, I'm getting a new one. Maybe next year! haha!

Rowdy 10-05-2007 12:51 PM
