Alright I went to my neighbors house this weekend, they have a daughter she is around 11 years old. I went inside, I see her on the kitchen getting something and she says hi, it was fairly early so she was wearing pajamas (or at least I hope they where pajamas) and the first thing I notice is her top is one with a huge playboy logo on the front and you can see her belly, next time I notice and what really bothered me was that she had a belly ring :disgust

I went home and got to think about it, I dont have a daughter or any kids for that matter but Im hella sure I wouldn't let my 11 year old daughter get a belly piercing or buy her playboy shit.

Maybe its normal at this time of age but fuck that if I have a daughter I will make her wear a burka until she is 18.

Thats what scares me, what is supposed to be an acceptable age for stuff like this. is 11 to young while 15 is alright? I guess people have different standards, but shit I really hope I dont have a daughter, I dont want to deal with stuff like that.

I have no kids but a friend of mine has three daughters. the oldest, 14 is pretty modest and wears just jeans and T-shirts. The middle daughter, 11, is a very a girly girl. She likes short skirts and wants to wear belly shirts and stuff like that. Here parents refuse to let her, but she has friends that are 11-12 and dress like they are 20 year old strippers. I often wonder who let's their kid wear that kind of stuff.

Peer pressure definitely a bitch, there is really no way to avoid it. But here is the thing, lets say you had a 12 year old girl, all her friends have belly piercing, dress way to slutty etc etc one day she gets home and tells you she wants a belly piercing. Im sure I would of said no and made sure she didnt get one period.

Now this neighbors daughter isnt hiding the fact she has a belly piercing and that she wears clothes that I wouldnt let my daughter wear at that age, so her parents are aware of it and have to be somewhat ok with it, which I guess bothers me a bit.

Then again its their kid and I wont tell them how to raise her, specially since I dont have kids. Its just something it got me thinking.

That's just wrong, and I don't have kids yet.

I'm not an old-fashioned girl but I think wearing such revealing clothes at an early age is just not good for a young kid...parents should teach them what to wear properly:)

My sister was the same kind of way. I'd go over to my dads house to hang out for the night and she would be wearing some pajama bottoms and a tight little shirt. Her boobs developed pretty quick, so it would draw attention quick. Goddamn I've wanted to kick the piss out of some of his friends like, "Man, she's 14!"

My daughter is 13 and just started asking for the belly piercing. I told her to come see me in a couple of years. Not sure how I will react in a couple of years yet, but it sure as hell ain't happening at 13. And no....I won't buy anything playboy yet either even though some of her friends have it.

wow, a navel piercing at age 11 is definitely a bit much. i definitely wouldn't go for that. :)

I'm a pretty liberal parent, but even I was mortified at stuff aimed at girls my daughters age, like sweatpants that had cherries on the butt....

My wife and I haven't spoken about it specifically, but I'd think we'd probably agree somewhere in the 14-16 range for a belly button ring and SHE would be the one paying for it AND any medicine for infections after the fact.

As for clothes that's a little tougher, but our schools are actually kind of helpful. They don't allow anything revealing like short skirts or spaghetti straps, so it's not a problem yet. I should mention our daughter is eight, so once she moves to her next school the policies could be different. To be honest though, as long as she's willing to have an open dialogue with us and isn't wearing short skirts pantyless at 14, I'd probably let her use her own discretion. By open dialogue, I mean she's willing to explain WHY she's wearing what she is and is willing to LISTEN to why we THINK what she's wearing isn't all that appropriate. Again, she'd be the one paying for clothes we don't fully approve of.

Something as simple as telling them what they can and can't wear them might scare them off of telling you about more serious problems their having or decisions they're considering. I'd rather my kids be able to come to us for anything and if that means giving a little in regards to their appearance, than so be it.

Hell no, my daughter is 7 and there is no way she's getting a belly piercing or anything like that. If she wants that done she'll have to wait till she's 18.

If my daughter was friends' with so and so that dressed this way... it's really tough, because you want them to have quality friends.. but you don't want to treat your kids with a military hand and say you will never!!! blah blah...

You tell them that they have to live by certain standards and that they should understand just because little Cindy down the street lives differently.. it doesn't mean our rules are bad.. they are just different.

Now the hard part is little Cindy will put pressure on your daughter to conform... that's where your kid has to stand up to it... or fold to it. and how do you react to that?

This isn't just belly piercings and cropped shirts... It's sexy clothing, lingerie, piercings, tattoos, drinking, smoking, making out with the boys.. testing bi-sexuality with the girls... etc etc etc.... You have to talk with your kids all the time!!!!! Talk to them about how strong they need to be. Getting hooked on something when you are 12 is different than testing something when you are 18.. or 25.

I didn't start drinking until I was 27. I do it occasionally now. Had I picked it up when I was 14.. I would most likely be a raging alki by now.

You have to help your kids understand that adolescence is a very hard time and they have to know what's right and wrong and stand up to it and as they say... just say no. They don't have to judge others.. but they must be in control of themselves.

That isn't going to stop her. It'll probably stop her from TELLING you though. So you won't be able to educate her properly. Putting your head in the sand puts you at risk of being a grandparent when you're very young AND puts your kids at risk of disease. I don't want to raise kids for the rest of my life OR have my kids fuck up their lives.

I totally disagree. If your parents allowed you to drink supervised at 14, the novelty would probably have worn off pretty quick. The problem comes when it's taboo and you sneak around to drink because it's cool. That's when kids plan their week at school around binge drinking on the weekend.

(note-I think 14 IS too young for supervised drinking, but I'd allow it at 16 and TRY to dissuade my kids until then)
