Dubai already is infested with whores.. You can check Cyclone .. It is one of the more popular ones. But the majority of hotels (Which allow female guests) have lounges which are basically brothels.. :thumbsup

Amazing, certainly - but in a Disneyland sort of way.
I'd love to see the place obviously but culturally-speaking, it's got zero value. Basically a massive playground for the very rich with Versaci and Mercedez on every corner and everything, and I mean everything, is uber-expensive.

Maybe the best way to describe it: Nice place to visit just to say you've been there but ...

It's hard to explain, and it has nothing to do with the Arabs (you barely notice it's a muslim country), but there's a strange transient vibe there that makes it impossible to call home. Everyone there is from somewhere else and is just working there for a set period of time.

Kevsh, not at all. Many of the buildings they are creating are office buildings, with the intention of bringing in large financial, insurance,and other types of administrative companies into Dubai. Their actual idea isn't to build Disney land, but that is certainly part of it.

The full idea is to create a long term vocation an sustainable economy that isn't dependant on oil production. This is the really key, as the Dubai leaders are smart enough to know that the black gold will stop flowing soon enough, and that at some point, so will the gravy train. They don't want to end up back as a bunch of nomadic camel herders.

You must watch Discovery just like me... that statement is all that needs to be said.

oil is only a small fraction of the economy Du Bai makes money from TOURISM.

Oil is still the big moneymaker... but it's running out in approximately 9 years.

On the surface it looks as if they are focusing on tourism, but the end game is that they are trying to become the financial/business hub of the middle east.

Did you know that they have mini cities dedicated to specific business markets? For instance there's Dubai Media City for film & video production projects, Internet City for the obvious... tons of major companies have already set up shop there. IBM, Microsoft etc.

There's no tax on the earnings there so companies usually operate their Dubai branches as a separate company.

Money is easy to find there as well. There's more investment capital per square foot in Dubai than any place in the world.

I had an office there for a while. I didn't spend a lot of time there but every time I was in town it was a whirlwind of business like nothing I have ever seen. Coming from a New York resident that's a big statement.

The interior wasn't anything special. It was very nice but not something you couldn't see in LA or Miami.

Guys, I currently live in Dubai for almost a year now, so feel free to ask me anything you like to know. Just to clear some of the things already mentioned in this thread:

- Dubai is a fantastic place to be in right now.
- The development (real estate or otherwise) going on here right now can't be matched by any place on earth. You realy have to see it to fully understand what is going on.
- Dubai IS a muslim country BUT you don't feel it at all.
- Some of the best clubs in the world are here and some of the best DJ's in world play here every few weeks.
- Some of the nicest bars you are likely to see.
- Dubai makes money by commerce (Jebel Ali is the biggest deep water port in the world), Tourism (you should check out some of the hotels here), Oil (but not to a huge extend). In addition to all of the above Dubai also makes money by providing services to thousands of international companies and corporations that have offices here in order to enjoy the tax free status.
- There are NO TAXES here :thumbsup
- Shop till you drop has a real meaning here ... there are more malls than you can count, and they are still building more (many more)
- Cars are fucking cheap (compared to most countries) so most people who have a good income can very easily afford to drive realy nice rides.
- No strip clubs but tons of whores (especially if you hang out at some of the high end clubs or bars)
- Tons of women here (that are not whores) becase a lot of young single women come here to work for some of the local airlines as flight attendands (Emirates airline alone employes about 10,000)
- You DONT want to drink and drive. Even a beer will land you in jail. The law has zero tolerance for this dew to the high accidents rate.
- Some other HUGE projects coming up: Dubai WaterFront and Palm Deira.

Ok ... rent and buying real estate is expensive. Its actually too expensive.
They only started offering freehold properties over the last 5-6 years. Because of that there was a huge demand from people already here as well as property speculators and investors froma round the world that drove prices through the roof. Thats why Dubai is enjoying so much development lately. People are throwing money at these developers in order to buy.

Most people say that its a bubble and is going to burst at some point but the goverment and real estate developers put in some laws and took some measures that will keep the market from crashing and burning. For example you are not allowed to sell a property for less than what you paid for it. This way they make sure that if there is a drop in prices and people panic there will not be a massive sell out at much lower prices that will kill the entire market.

Having said that, coming here on holiday is good value for money. You can get any hotel type you like (depends on your own budget) and the service is excellent because they have very cheap labour from China, Philippines and India. Going out is good value if you compare to any other big city especialy if you take into account what you get for your money. Most resort hotels are a sight on their own. Just walking around makes you feel good :)
You can find top restaurants by top chefs and also cheap take outs that taste great... all good value for money.

Buying food at the supermarket is prety cheap. Alcohol is the only item considered "expensive" because there is some tax on it (as this is a muslim country) but its still cheaper than most large cities.

Of course ... if you ARE a millionare ... then you HAVE TO COME.
Being a VIP and having tons of money opens a lot of doors for you here.
There is no limit to how much fun you can have. A little bling is always expected here :)

Well ... you are right to some extend.

The laws about porn and drugs are very very strict. They dont let you forget that this is a muslim country.
At the same time drinking and driving is not allowed which is not a bad thing if you ask me.
Because the law is very strict here (some times a bit too much) there is virtualy no crime here. its very very safe to walk around at any time of day (or night).

Its a compromise realy but not a bad one.

actually the gazzlions they are spending to build all this shit, islands, tallest hotels, underwater hotels, skiing mountain, etc... is ALL from oil money.

They building all this crap because they know the oil is going to run dry in the not so far future so they trying to build an economy from tourism so their country wont go back to the stone age when the oil money is gone, since they would have no other resources there to make money.

99.99% of the people speak English.
Banks, restaurants, bars even goverment services all in English.
If you speak Arabic then fine ... but if not .. you will have no issue here man.

The truth is that the vast majority of the people here are not locals. Out of 3 million people who live here maybe 300K are locals (i.e born here). Maybe another 500K from other Arab countries but all the rest are from all over the world.

There is even a Chinatown here :)

By the way ... a lot of the locals are some of the coolest people you are ever likely to meet. They party harder than anyone you know ... especially the younger crowd. However they still try to respect some of the traditions and restrictions that have to be in place in a Muslim country.

My guess is that in places like Dubai things will change dramatically in 1-2 generations and get rid of a lot more of the restrictions that come from being a muslim country. There is even talk of casinos opening up here. Dubai holdings recently bought 8-10 percent of MGM casinos.
