Need a laptop under $700 for my son

Windows XP must be an option.

Other than that - I'm clueless which way to turn. Where does one get the best bang for the buck?

Jace 10-01-2007 03:57 PM

you would be hard pressed to not find a basic laptop for under $700 these days

just got my buddy a dual core athlon with 2gb of ram for $499

peterk 10-01-2007 04:25 PM

Have you checked ebay or craigslist for some second hand ones?

After Shock Media 10-01-2007 04:35 PM

If it is for school and or general use.

Do not get caught up in the hype. Find a standard cheap laptop. Most several year old lap tops are perfectly fine and fast enough to run all needed applications and the like. *unless you want him to be a big time gamer.

I personally would visit Dell then check out there refirbished area and pick up the extra waranty. You should get out of there with a hell of a laptop for well under your budget if not under half of it. With a full warenty

Alky 10-01-2007 04:37 PM

Dell usually has periodic sales around that range to as low as the 690+ range.

yeah, I have ordered a lot of shit from them too, no idea what is up

it says too call customer service and it will be a "exchange item" scenario, so I assume they were preselling the laptop and gateway backed out or something

Invest more and put your son on a mac, it'll be better in the long run ;-)

Personally I wouldn't buy a second hand laptop, I have a small mountain of half-dead laptops that will work for a time and they have various intermittent problems - screens will die, power will turn off for no reason (plugged in with charged battery), system will BSOD - clean windows reinstall didn't solve problem... etc. I think a good number of people selling second hand ones probably have some issues with them, even if they don't know it. I usually have a new laptop last about 6-8 months before it starts having serious issues - and it's a problem to get warranty repair because usually the issues come and go so I can't prove it. Buy new, cheap, and get a good warranty - that's my advice. I have had a panasonic toughbook (which I'm typing on) last over 2 years without any problems, but at about 4-5 times the cost of a regular notebook - I'm not sure it's worth it.

I hear you on that, but this isn't the time. He's 14 and it's his first "big ticket" item, he's paying for half and that's what he can afford. Plus, I view it like a first car - ALWAYS give a kid a beater, because they're going to run it into a pole or something anyway before they learn to respect what they've got :1orglaugh

I would never have considered Dell before, but those are some nice prices, hot damn!

Zuzana Designs 10-02-2007 06:47 AM

I have found lots of used laptops and desktop computers on craigslist. You just have to find the people neededing cash

MrVids 10-02-2007 08:26 AM

oddly enough, i picked up a nice little HP at Best Buy for $699. They had a similar Gateway for $599. should stroll into the store and check em out.

thanks for the input everyone!

xbizdon 10-02-2007 01:16 PM

Wolfy, they've got that HP for $699 at Costco. It's a nice machine with basic bells and whistles. But here's the plus at Costco: They extend the manufacturers warranty another year. So you get 2 years.
