It was a long URL... stanford.edu
I used to use it way back when Yahoo was just a list of websites.

Is there an archived version somewhere now? Might be fun to check out.

The Web site started out as "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web" but eventually received a new moniker with the help of a dictionary. The name Yahoo! is an acronym for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," but Filo and Yang insist they selected the name because they liked the general definition of a yahoo: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth." Yahoo! itself first resided on Yang's student workstation, "Akebono," while the software was lodged on Filo's computer, "Konishiki" - both named after legendary sumo wrestlers.

i can't believe that yahoo is number one in traffic in the internet..

and google second?? all the stats pages like alexa make yahoo 1st..

yahoo fucking sucks and is dead since 2002.. google or wikipedia must be the first ones.. not yahoo..

but we all know alexa stats are pure crap.

It's not hard to believe... how many subdomains of yahoo.com are there? I can think of 5-6 off the top of my head and they are all portals in themselves.

Google might be more popular, but think in terms of web traffic - with Yahoo, it's more a destination, with content galore. Google on the other hand, is only the beginning of the journey, not the end of it. It has cool apps, but no sticking power - that's the difference IMHO.

are you retarded? Yahoo is a portal, not a search engine... Google is, thus making Yahoo have TONS more content, not to mention the number 1 free email service, number 1 chatrooms online, and the second best search engine on the net...

Keep in mind that not all google visitors arrive at Google.com. A lot of them are redirected based on their geographical location. Now the number of people visiting sites like google.com.au and google.ca might not seem like much, but it certainly adds up.

There are dozens more country specific google domains. I'd say Google would have more traffic than google for sure. And let's not forget that they also run Orkut, which is ranked 7th or so on Alexa.

that's probably because still milions of users still use Yahoo mail, and visit Yahoo frontpage because of news...

but in terms of searching for something, yahoo is fucked up.
it's now more than some kind of portal than search engine...

yahoo fantasy football alone gets a shit load of traffic, now count all the the other cats like movies, groups, yada yada yada...google is just a search page for the most part.

Wow...memories. I remember dialing in through IDT and using gopher. The Netscape browser was an unbelievable innovation. Then I switched to netcom.
