The most ridiculous Los Angeles technology to ever be invinted.

So check this out. LA just announced electronic parking meters where you just swipe your card to load up the meter.

And just how long do you think it'll be before someone comes up with a way to download all those CC numbers out of a machine? Or find a way to tap into the modem that they are all installed with.

It's ridiculous. Quarters is the best way to do that kind of business. If you are the city and someone decides to rip you off, you just lose the amount in that meter. If you are a crook, you only score is the amount in that meter.

Now, you can potentially score thousands of CC numbers.

That being said.. anyone have any credit card stealing software? I just got a crazy idea.

I much prefer that than pull up and have to sprint fast to a shop, buy something I don't want for cheap just to get change.

I hate change.

There is always a few bucks in mixed change in my car somewhere. I'd rather lose change than my entire bank account.

This is still a bit smarter than when the city of San Francisco wanted to give beggars the ability to process credit cards.

Seriously. They did.

I like the IDEA of the CC parking meters.. BUT I also understand what you are saying about how easy it would be to fraud those same machines..

Both MasterCard and Visa have zero liability policies.

Yeah, some things just shouldn't be credit-card capable. What would be smarter is if they let you setup and account and then have a little keychain thingy you wave at the meter and pay it, like a PikePass.

It cost's too much to park anywhere.Nobody has 5 bucks in quarters to park for a hour. It's a cash grab from the city

I dont see it being that big of a problem. Stolen credit card numbers are already dime a dozen, and pretty much useless. What the scammers want is the PIN numbers so they can go grab cash out of an ATM, which they would be unable to get using that.

Bad idea UNLESS they make some sort of a card you buy from the city that is only for parking meters. A parking smart card. But using your cc for it, bad, bad, bad idea.

Next thing you know there will be a swipe card reader to charge you for using your own driveway lol Can't wait for the technology to cross the pond.

DamageX 10-01-2007 12:55 AM

We've had that here for a few years already. Never heard of anyone doing what you mentioned. Does this mean that thieves here are stupid and all the smart ones have moved to the US? :)

Why do you think that the parking meter will store your credit card # ?

If you use your card on it, it can be skimmed. ATMS are the same BUT most have cameras now or are in places that are difficult to do such things. But a meter... no problem.
