Trial and error!! That is the best way. Read up what you can but there is going to come a time where you have to just put a site up and try different things until you get it going where you want it!!

Google > wade thru the swamp for the truth > "know" the search terms for your niche (database) > wade thru the swamp more > create a website with substance > create sitemap/s > tailor all prime pages based on what you have learned > find relevent inbound link partners > if that works after some time - repeat from "create a website..." - if not, go back to the swamp for the truth.

It's easier than it sounds and not exactly a mystery :thumbsup
