Has anyone treated their dog for heart failure?
 

My 14-year-old Pug has been coughing. It's that heart failure type cough, so I know what they are going to say.

From my research online, it looks like either Lasix or Enalapril. I guess Lasix helps to eliminate extra fluid and Enalapril helps to pump extra fluid.

Also, low sodium dog food since salt causes retention of fluid.


Anyone had their dog on any medications for this?

I know you love you dog man but um really think about extending his life beyond what it should be. I see way to many people keeping real old dogs alive when they really should not be and are often in pretty bad pain and you can see it in their eyes just down right depressed and fed up with life yet they know its you who want them there and they do not want to hurt you either.

When I was younger my mom would have our pets put to sleep when I was in school and I didn't know it was going to happen.

For me to say "Alright, kill my dog now." and then pay them money for doing this .... There is no way. If I could see that she was in great pain, not eating and peeing all over then maybe that is a different story. But she is far from being that bad.

Dunno what country your in, but over here our dogs get a worm called heart worm and it makes them cough pretty bad, it might be something to look up, but then again I dont know if you get that worm where you are, anywayI hope ya dog turns out well

Yeah but you are about to say Alright prolong my dogs life, and then pay them even more money.

Just give it some thought. This coming from someone who spend close to 4k on my cat to only have it die 3 days latter. Ok it was dieing three days latter and it was more my wifes cat (very young still, cat) and she cried while she put it down herself. It would not of made it back to the hospital.

I had a friend's dog just pass from heart failure. Can't really comment on the drugs, but I feel your pain that you are probably going through. Lost my dog back in December.

UPDATE!

X-Ray's showed that my dog's heart is fine. The true cause of this cough is tracheal collapse. Her airway has become really thin.

The options were to either treat this with medication right now or send her to a specialist and put a scope down her throat to check for a tumor that might be pressing it shut. Given her age, I went with the medication first.

She is now on three pills and hardly coughs.

The vet said she should also lose weight because fat around her neck is contributing to putting pressure on the trachea.

I have a 2 month old pug too!

glad to hear about your dog.
just remember that you want to be a good mommy/daddy but always ask yourself if you're doing it for you or for the dog.
