Jet boats, choppers & Devil's Hole! [PICS]
Earlier today I lucked out with the timing of my trip down to Devil's Hole in the lower Niagara River gorge.
They were shooting a movie in the monster rapids (class 6) of the river with the big jet boats and a chopper. And of course...I was there with the Nikon and the 200mm lens! They have half a dozen jetboats that run constantly through the summer months. They load at Queenston, travel through the rapids at Devil's Hole and then up to the Great Whirlpool. They don't go beyond the Whirlpool or near the Falls themselves since the current and rapids at the entrance to the Whirlpool is too risky for the public. http://www.whirlpooljet.com/ |
that boat is fucking pimp. Wonder how much HP it has!

Devil's Hole is unique in the world. Many rivers have level 6 rapids at some point....usually because of underlying rocks. Devil's Hole rapids are fearsome simply because of how the river narrows at this point and sheer volume of water. Its still over 50-60 feet deep through the channel. Giant boulders on each side of the river have fallen from the escarpment above over time - and resulted in the narrow passage. Some dude not long ago rescued a couple of people in the area. He noticed they'd gotten caught in the eddys and risked his life to swim out and save'em. Niagara's history is like that. |
