Collecting of Details on Travelers Documented
U.S. Effort More Extensive Than Previously Known

By Ellen Nakashima
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, September 22, 2007; Page A01

The U.S. government is collecting electronic records on the travel habits of millions of Americans who fly, drive or take cruises abroad, retaining data on the persons with whom they travel or plan to stay, the personal items they carry during their journeys, and even the books that travelers have carried, according to documents obtained by a group of civil liberties advocates and statements by government officials.

The personal travel records are meant to be stored for as long as 15 years, as part of the Department of Homeland Security's effort to assess the security threat posed by all travelers entering the country. Officials say the records, which are analyzed by the department's Automated Targeting System, help border officials distinguish potential terrorists from innocent people entering the country.

Austin will be one of the test sites for a federally funded study on replacing the gas tax with a charge on the mileage people drive.

The cars of about 450 Austin-area volunteers, roughly half in 2008 and the other half in 2009, will be outfitted with a Global Positioning System receiver and a small on-board computer. The system will collect information about miles driven, keeping track of the states in which the driving occurred. Then, the system will periodically dump that information into a billing system.

Policymakers across the United States see a mileage tax as a potential successor to the gas tax. The federal government has an 18.4 cents per gallon tax, and states have their own levies. The state gas tax in Texas is 20 cents per gallon.

The computer will not retain information on precisely where drivers went, just how far and in what jurisdiction.

Why??

Because believe it or not, there are some in our governement who believe we are Terrorists to the Moral Fabric of Society.

For everyone to stand down, not question authority, give up our Civil Liberties in the name of security and say who gives a fuck is very very distrubing and in masses could lead down a very scarry path.

Sweet, now the government wants a gps tracker in every car, under the guise of removing the gas tax. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they implemented this and didn't even remove the gas tax, as proposed, and end up double taxing. Watch.

Pretty soon they are going to install cameras and microphones in all vehicles, saying it's to try and end people falling asleep at the wheel, or talking on cell phones while driving.

I'm surprised you have a FSC banner on your 2257 statement page. After all you should be agreeing 100% with the DOJ on 2257 regulations and record keeping.
As long as you're not doing anything illegal then who gives a fuck about inspections or the fact that the FSC is fighting in court over it. :thumbsup

You're not far off. GM does this already.. They call it OnStar, while onstar claims to protect privacy, for how long will that last. Between that and OBD-III (not an automotive wizard here, but from things I've read), it won't be long before it's all tracked.. Your papers please?

So true, anyone who feels it is ok for any government to police the people encroaching on civil liberties is an enemy to democracy and freedom. those who think like that should be put to death.

Do not think this is even limited to America.
Any government that could has always used whatever means it could afford or come up with to spy on its own citizens more so than those of other countries.

The trick is to allow people to accept it in their every day life as the norm and to not question what is going on. Hell the best excuse has been used in this thread already. Why should you worry if you are not doing anything illegal.

My laptop has been searched when I re-entered the USA. If they find any record of anything illegal including erased images from your cache file, you can be charged with a crime.

Personally, if I was going to travel, I'd use a new laptop with my communications software only.

Save yourself some trouble, be clean when you cross national borders these days.

Rage Against The Machine - Fistful Of Steel Lyrics

Fistful Of Steel

Huh!
Check it...uggh!
Silence
Something about silence makes me sick
?cause silence can be violent
Sorta like a slit wrist

If the vibe was suicide
Then you would push da button
But if ya bowin? down
Then let me do the cuttin?

Some speak the sounds
But speak in silent voices
Like radio is silent
Though it fills the air with noises
Its transmissions bring submission
As ya mold to the unreal
And mad boy grips the microphone
Wit? a fistful of steel
Yeah...and mad mad boy grips the microphone
Wit? a fistful of steel

Wit? a fistful of steel
(?cause I know the power of the question)
Wit? a fistful of steel
Wit? a fistful of steel
(and I won?t stop ?cause I know the power of the question)

It?s time to flow like the fluid in ya veins
If ya will it, I will spill it
And ya out just as quick as ya came
Not a silent one
But a defiant one
Never a normal one
?cause I?m the bastard son
With the visions of the move
Vocals not to soothe
But to ignite and put in flight
My sense of militance
Groovin?, playin? this game called survival
The status, the elite, the enemy, the rival
The silent sheep slippin?, riffin?, trippin?
Give ya a glimpse of the reality I?m grippin?
Steppin? into the jam and I?m slammin? like shaquille
Mad boy grips the microphone
Wit? a fistful of steel
Yeah...and mad boy grips the microphone
Wit? a fistful of steel

Wit? a fistful of steel
(?cause I know the power of the question)
Wit? a fistful of steel
Wit? a fistful of steel
(and I won?t stop ?cause I know the power of the question)

Ahh shit

And I won?t stop ?cause I know the power of the question

And if the vibe was suicide
Then you would push da button
But if ya bowin? down
Then let me do the cuttin`

Yeah!
Come on!

A .44 full of bullets
Face full of pale
Eyes full of empty
A stare full of nails
The roulette ball rolls alone on the wheel
A mind full of fire
And a fistful of steel

And if the vibe was suicide
Then you would push da button
But if ya bowin? down
Then let me do the cuttin?

Yeah! wit? a fistful of steel!
Come on!
Uggh!
Wit? a fistful of steel!
Uggh!

Fistful Of Steel

All I know is check your bags 10 times before you come back to be sure you're not carrying. When I got back from the Cup, they had dogs waiting outside the plane sniffing you as you got off. Fascists!

Like there are 4 federal agents keeping track of the sextoys and the playboy you have in your suitcase... that's not what they are after. I always fail to see the problem with these kind of things. You really think anyone gives a shit about your "information"? It's not like they are printing it out and handing it out to your neighbours. Sure in a perfect world we'd have 100% privacy ... but unfortunatly that world doesn't exist.

Nice example, but an analogous illustration of this is already happening with license plates and electronic speeding / red light cameras.
