Interstate 75 "terrorists"

MSNBC reports that the guys who were stopped for the last 16 hours on Interstate 75 in Florida may have been "joking" in response to suspicious glances that the waitress was giving them.

http://www.msnbc.com/news/807521.asp?0dm=C11PN

Yet another example of the new A-S-H-C-R-O-F-T order (since apparently you can't say the "A" word in here).

I think that the waitress was an idiot. There's so much wrong with her report - like why would 3 terrorists brag openly in english in a diner and say things like "we don't have enough explosives"? 2 of the 3 guys are naturalized US citizens. Georgia is an assbackwards place to begin with. I was just there over the summer (against my will) and it's like they are still fighting the civil war.

One more reason to hate the south.

Jay Leno and David Letterman should be sent to jail too!

Carrie 09-13-2002 03:24 PM

1. She was a restaurant patron, not a waitress
2. First their story was that they didn't say it. Now their story is that they were joking.
3. First their story was that they were going from New York to Miami. When someone pointed out their STOLEN Illinois license plates, their story changed to "we're going from Chicago to Miami".
4. They blew through a toll booth and ran from the police for 8 miles afterwards.

Ash, smash... the lady did what was right. Obviously these idiots are more than what they're claiming to be, and their multiple lies, stolen license plates, and moderately criminal behavoir aren't helping things any.

Oh but hey - let's just overlook the facts so that we can bash someone who's not even involved, right? Right.
Back to your regularly scheduled bullshit.

Mr.Fiction 09-13-2002 03:27 PM

Jokes make people laugh. Carrie's posts always make me laugh too. Maybe she/he should be arrested too? :)

Warphead 09-13-2002 03:31 PM

I'm a big fan of harsh humor, but kids get suspended for joking about going on a shooting spree. You'd think med students (as one's sister mentioned not less than 42 times) would be a little smarter. Especially in the south, those guys bring guns to bingo.

I think the guys were idiots for joking about it in a public restaurant. Anyone with any common sense would know that others would react exactly as the waitress had.

Now if these guys actually did have a bomb, would you feel the same way?

I notice those things too. Also, is it a coincedence that 1 of the top 10 terrorist on the FBI list was arrested today. And guess what airport he was arrested at? Miami. Plus it doesn't help that its Friday the 13th. It just sound odd to me. Don't be suprised if this story disappears rather quickly.

These guys have probably spent the last year putting up with racial profiling, supicious looks and mistrust. Although their actions were a bit OTT, I fully understand why they did it. You should see some of the suspicious looks I get just because I talk with a different accent, despite the fact that I'm about as pale as you could get!

Shoneys waitress -- "Give me a big tip for this lunch or I'm telling the police you are terrorists!"

Toxictoy 09-13-2002 04:55 PM

You want it point by point - you got it:

1. She was a restaurant patron, not a waitress

>>No the article states she was a Shoney's Waitress as has been stated on THIS board about 42.3 times today alone.

2. First their story was that they didn't say it. Now their story is that they were joking.

>>We only know what the media filtered to us and what was filtered to them. We don't know what their original story was at all.

3. First their story was that they were going from New York to Miami. When someone pointed out their STOLEN Illinois license plates, their story changed to "we're going from Chicago to Miami".

>>The brother of one of the "terrorists" said that it was his license plate that was quote unquote stolen. Not for nothing but they are New Yorkers and I'll bet you there are a lot of cars in NY with license plates that don't necessarily belong to them - it doesn't make those people terrorists.

4. They blew through a toll booth and ran from the police for 8 miles afterwards.

>>They only fled once they realized that the police were chasing them. It's wrong but action doesn't in and of itself mean they are terrorists.

To be honest my biggest beef is that the south doesn't exactly have a huge record of tolerance to people of color or differing nationality. I think the lady overreacted and as a NY'er I can see this happening.

What's even more wrong about the situation is that how many man hours we paid for our government to interrogate these people and close of a major interstate because of an "overheard conversation". Sounds a little like a witch hunt to me.

Phil21 09-13-2002 05:33 PM

blah blah blah.. pull the race card out some more.

The only thing "racist" was the lady who scrutized the guys overly much. That's it. Period.

The stupid ass students laid their own grave by thinking they'd give the lady a scare she may have very well deserved. The only problem is.. it worked TOO well.

At this point, any sane non-idiot would have told the cop that immediately upon questioning, instead of being unhelpful and denying it. They would have been in some shit, but I doubt the interstate would have been closed, etc.

The part that made be absolutely livid about this, is their IDIOTS of a family. The sister saying how her life has been "irreversibly ruined" because they were detained for 16 hours.

Gimme a break. If I had done that shit, my parents would have been out there saying how I really am a good kid, but I excersized poor judgement and got what I deserved.

Let the guys cool off for a couple days in jail, and get a couple misdemeanors. Hell, kids get expelled from school for FAR less than that.

Repeat. It's not racism what the cops did. The kids got everything they asked for and more, play with fire and get burned so the saying goes. I understand why they did it, and I'm sure I would have been tempted to do the same thing, but I'm not a fucking idiot and would have realized what might have happened.

So, hit 'em with the book if for no other reason than their family trying to trump it up and use it as a means to further their agenda and play "victim".

Honeyslut 09-13-2002 05:44 PM

The customer that turned the gentlemen in had a small boy with her. She used his color crayon that the cafe gave him to write down the license plates.

I think it's a bit sad that some guys would pull this prank next to a young child..

Chris R 09-13-2002 05:49 PM

Her story along with them running a toll was enough for them to be suspicious. They didn't know how accurate she was - and even if she was racist - doesn't mean the police were. The police will pretty much pull anyone over for running a toll - and I would HOPE that even if they were white guys - and there was an alert or something on them - they would have investigated them as well. Police only have the info that is given to them.

The woman's kid even knew they were playing a joke. And the police figured it out eventually.

I probably would have too if I was in their shoes. Closing the whole interstate down might have been a little bit of overkill, but at least they get some training (better than the times I have seen bomb technicians WITHOUT protective clothing get hurt on TV).

I doubt they expected her to call the police and I am sure they were scared when it happened.

I wouldn't let the police search my car either - and people should feel free to refuse.

And at least the one kid has a possible good excuse for late homework - they blew up one of his book bags.

They young child knew it was a prank.

"My son said, 'Oh Momma, they're just messing with you.' Then I thought about it, and I said, 'Well, you know, they shouldn't be messing around like that...

From CNN

Leads me to believe there is more to what happened than is being told. It is not uncommon for people to exagerrate claims to police to get them to investigate.

I don't think the cops were being racist at all - they were doing their job. I do think the lady is a racist however. My first thought when I heard the whole story was that there had better be some physical evidence to go by and not just some lady saying she overheard a conversation. Now it looks like it is just that.

I'm sad for my country that we all now suspect each other. 2 of the 3 men are naturalized citizens. The third has a legitimate student visa. What's next? Internment camps?

nocostporn 09-13-2002 06:36 PM

didn't do anything? why run?...I guess they took a page out of the O.J innocent book,See a cop and ruuuun! even if you're innocent!..You know damn well that hicks story was embelished a tad bit BUT innocent people don't run a toll booth when they see a cop,and like Carrie said their story has changed 3 times... whats the scoop? I've been asleep for the past 6 hours

Toxictoy 09-13-2002 08:44 PM

It could be that their story may very well not have changed and that it just may be that the media's reporting of their story that is actually changing as they get more information.

Nedder 09-13-2002 09:05 PM

My only regret in the whole incident is that it wasn't some prejudiced patron/waitress that overheard them, and instead it was some Hells Angels or some other biker crowd that would have shown them what happens to people that joke about 911.

Gee ... do you really think that was a factor?

I'm really glad nobody got hurt. I'm really glad that there was no explosives. I'm really not suprised certain alarmists are putting out rumors as facts ("stolen" license plates), since all three of them were released with no charges filed.

There sure are some idiots on this board.

These guys got exactly what they deserved for trying to perpetrate a "hoax."

I could careless what the "redneck", "racist" nurse from Georgia's immediate feelings about muslim people are...these guys only confirmed her beliefs when they decided toy with her.

Imagine if someone had heard a similar conversation involving planes smacking into the WTC back on 9-10-2001 and decided that the politically correct thing to do was to ignore the statements and keep imagining there aren't 1,000's of radical muslims who want us all dead.

I am a free speech advocate but as we all know you can't yell "Fire" in a crowded movie theatre. It has it's limitations, and talking in hushed tones about a possible terrorist act is one.

I look at this situation like I look at the Rodney King situation.

We all have laws to follow, cops do as well as their departmental procedures.

But once you come into contact with Johnny Law and you decide to stop playing by the rules, then expect that possibly their rules might have gone out the window as well.

No cops shouldn't be beating motorists, harassing muslim medical students...but then if you run from a guy with a gun who has asked you to stop...don't be surprised if that extremely fallible human being doesn't shoot you in the back.

Sure he'd be in the wrong...but you'd be dead right.

Fuck these guys...once again they got exactly what they deserved for making such bone head statements.

What troubles me is the word "hoax".

We haven't heard the whole story yet (at least, I haven't read it) but I wonder if a more appropriate term might be "stupid joke".

If it was a hoax, then these guys went out of their way to create a belief that a dangerous situation exisited, when in fact it did not. That can be exceedingly dangerous and probably deserves at least some punishment.

If it was a joke, then probably they were trying to have a little fun at the expense of a paranoid and/or ignorant individual. It blew up in their faces. Maybe "prank" would be a better term. It may have been a bad idea, but that doesn't necessarily make it criminal.

But again, I don't know all the details.

Yes, a case of terminal stupidity. Like not using profiling for selecting people for extra screening before boarding an airliner.

And actually, profiling is already happening, even though it is particularly stupid profiling.

Because my daughter is an airline employee, I can R/T anywhere in the Southwest Airlines system for about $65, but the tickets I use are standby tickets, which are, by definition, one-way tickets.

Well, the Sourthwest computer sees anyone using cheap one-way tickets as a particular threat. (This is because terrorists are very frugal and wouldn't spend the extra money on a R/T, right?)

Anyway, if 100 people are getting on the plane and they pull 3 or 4 out for special attention, 80%-90% of the time I'm one of them.

Before someone mentions Tim McVeigh or the fact that a 90 year old great-grandmother in a wheelchair could conceivably be a terrorist, let's get real.

You can't screen everybody (even though that's what I understand they do in Israel, which hasn't had a hijacking in quite some time). The money to do screenings and the resources for doing it are limited, so one must use these resources intelligently, which doesn't mean politically correctly.

As long as it's not just logically possible but seemingly more likely that Middle Easter Muslim males will hijack a plane than a military veteran with a crew-cut or a granny in a wheelchair, it just makes more sense to pay more attention to them. Hijacking planes is their MO at the moment.

But, no, Southwest almost invariably makes sure that on this, my 65th trip with them, I still have no explosives in my suitcase.

I hope you all feel safer.

Toxictoy 09-14-2002 07:18 AM

Here are REAL terrorists that were arrested in Buffalo:

http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/09/14/buf...sts/index.html

This whole episode on Interstate 75 just gets me angry. I see this as a freedom of speech issue totally and I hope those guys sue that woman. There was no physical evidence and frankly if they think that her claim was "credible" then I'm scared. Who's to say that your next door neighbor can't call the police and say they heard you are an Adult Webmaster and that your porn had pictures that were being used to convey information to terrorists groups. Next thing you know your computer is impounded and your business grinds to a halt until they figure out 2 months later (after closely scrutinizing every pic on your computer) that you are not a terrorist.

Argh.

You'd be scared shitless KNOWING that you're a) foreign, b) next potential target of a terrorist witch hunt, c) you'd probably be hung if you admitted to making a joke about terrorism. That's probably why they denied.

Look at what happens to kids who make guns with their hands (expelled but appealed).

If you and your friends are joking, it's not really your fault that some bitch is being nosy and listening in your conversation. Hell, me and my friends start talking suspiciously/stupidly when we notice someone is being nosy.

But I do agree that they should have been more careful if they were joking, if they were serious, then fuck 'em.

Very good point!!!! We can't have people just making wild accusations without some accountability for the ensuing cataclysmics. I wouldn't be suprised if the police were a little over eager -- chasing Muslims down the highway at high speeds is just too damn fun to pass up!

I haven't seen any evidence on the news of anyone corroborating the woman's story - the waitress or any of the other patrons of the restaurant. It's beginning to seem like this woman may actually have the problem - and that makes me even more disturbed over this whole incident.

All three are saying they never said anything about 9/11. Is it in the realm of possiblity that this woman is the one with the problem and that she took one look at them and cried wolf?
