A survey asked 1,011 American adults how long they would feel OK without going on the Web, to which 15 percent said a just a day or less, 21 percent said a couple of days and another 19 percent said a few days.

Only a fifth of those who took part in an online survey conducted by advertising agency JWT between Sept 7 and 11 said they could go for a week.

"People told us how anxious, isolated and bored they felt when they are forced off line," said Ann Mack, director of trend spotting at JWT, which conducted the survey to see how technology was changing people's behavior.

"They felt disconnected from the world, from their friends and family," she told Reuters.

The poll, released on Wednesday, found the use of cell phones and the Internet were becoming more and more an essential part of life with 48 percent of respondents agreeing they felt something important was missing without Internet access.

More than a quarter of respondents -- or 28 percent -- admitted spending less time socializing face-to-face with peers because of the amount of time they spend online.

It also found that 20 percent said they spend less time having sex because they are online.

Cell phones won out over television in a question asking which device people couldn't go without but the Internet trumped all, regarded as the most necessary.

"It is taking away from offline activities, among them having sex, socializing face-to-face, watching TV and reading newspapers and magazines. It cuts into that share," said Mack.

"I don't suppose their partners are too pleased about it."

Mack said a clear trend to emerge from the survey was the increasing need for mobility with people no longer satisfied with just broadband access from home and wanting hand-held devices like iPhones and BlackBerrys.

JWT, whose parent company is WPP, has come up with a new advertising category for people whose lives are so tied up with new technology.

"We are calling them 'digitivity denizens,' those who see their cell phones as an extension of themselves, whose online and offline lives are co-mingled and who would chose a Wi-Fi connection over TV any day," said Mack.

"This is how they communicate, entertain and live."

Anyone wanna take a wild guess how many webmasters fit this description?

I think those people didnt have much of a life offline to begin with.

heh, I can see how people would give up their "friends" for a computer. After all, few people have very many friends, most people have alot of people they call friends which really are just acquaintances. Not really losing much there.

But not sex.

I agree with that article 100%. It's a sad thing though. I think there actually might be an addiction to computers and the internet that is affecting many lives.

For me personally, when I'm not on the computer working I feel like I'm wasting my time when I could be getting links for my site, building new sites, or making current ones better. Sometimes I think I might actually have an addiction to the internet/computer. I mean when I'm not on the computer this thought constantly comes to my mind.

polish_aristocrat 09-21-2007 01:13 AM

I was like that at one point... Now I take 2 days out of the week just to stay away from the computer. At first it was hard because I was always thinking someone might be contacting me for business or sometimes I felt like I should just be working and whatever, But I had to do it for my wife. I didn't have an addiction to the computer, it was an addiction to working and constantly being productive. It's amazing how fast time goes by sitting in that computer chair.

I'm sure it's not "just" Americans. Just the study was done here in the US. I'm sure you would find the somethings in other parts of the world where people have easy access to the web.

I know myself, I hate not being able to check my sites on a daily or hourly basis.

Precisely what I was thinking. Do they mean daily sex with the same partner? weekly sex with the same partner? Monthly sex with whoever is cheapest?

It's just a sensationalized bullshit article from a bullshit media group.

The interviewed around 1000 people. I assume this was in a large city, perhaps at a college, perhaps at a couple of IT companies...etc. It's not enough people.

If they interviewed 1000 farmers, about 90% would say they couldn't care less about the internet... :1orglaugh

Point is, they don't note the demographics and occupation of the very small group of people they interviewed.

I'm not american, this article doesn't have anything to do with me :winkwink:

America is pretty fat compared to the other western nations.

SykkBoy 09-21-2007 10:40 AM

Most people giving up a "sex life" by being online, weren't usually partakers of a sex life to begin with...hence going online...

DaddyHalbucks 09-21-2007 10:44 AM

They're all potential customers.

:)

cool1 09-21-2007 10:44 AM

I gave up a very active social life to stay online much of the time
but it was really no lose to me, after 20+ yrs of partying etc it was time to drop all and start someth9ing new.
some days it seems like it is almost that time again.

Brother Bilo 09-21-2007 11:03 AM

I don't get it at all. I'm on the computer all day for work, so when I get home the computer is the last place I go. The only thing I do on the computer at home is check my fantasy stats and email.

One of my ex's became so addicted to the internet that our sex life became practically non-existent. :(

CynthiaB 09-21-2007 12:47 PM

My friends and my sex life are on the computer so I'm not giving up anything!
