I think it is for many reasons.

Easier than going to the shops.
Cheaper to deliver than shops.
Cheaper to buy than shops.
No box to hide.
Give the customer a scene at a time and charge him for only that.

I've said it for ages, the monthly membership format is yesterday. As much as shops are.

Give your traffic what it wants, 20 minutes or porn for the price they will pay.

Thank you for your comments. The magic join link sites are doing well thank you. In fact the $5 sign up model works very well. $5 paysite membership. This is our traffic and the response to the $5 option was astounding, 90% of the members who signed up on this tour went for the $5 option.
