Trent Reznor Says "Steal My Music"

a few months ago T.Rez commented about how his label is charging australian customers twice the standard amount for his latest disc. the reasoning? because he has "dedicated fans that are willing to pay any amount" according to his label.

During a concert last night, he told fans, '...Has anyone seen the price come down? Okay, well, you know what that means ? STEAL IT. Steal away. Steal and steal and steal some more and give it to all your friends and keep on stealin'. Because one way or another these mother****ers will get it through their head that they're ripping people off and that's not right.'"

He quit drugs and beefed up. I can't think of a single artist that stopped using drugs and got better. Perfect examples: Scott Weiland(STP) and Aaron Lewis(Staind)

Trent can say that much more easily than most - he has made a ton of money, and continues to make a ton of money off of back catalog, radio airplay, and successful world tours. He "made it" so now a few sales lost aren't anywhere near as important to him.

Remember also, for every $20 album sale, he might only see $1 or $2. So his losses in the deal are way lower than everyone elses.

He wouldn't be saying the same thing if he was on album 1, with a huge record company advance for recording hanging over his head, with every sale being the difference between being ass deep in debt and making enough money to eat pB&J sandwiches tomorrow.

True. However most musicians actually end up in debt to record companies. they get big advances and then spend a ton on recording, videos, promotion, booze whatever and their royalty rates suck and they never sell enough records to pay back the advances. They tend to make most of their money doing live shows and selling merchandise like shirts.

If you have noticed downloading and stealing music is the biggest topic in the music business right now yet there are very few musicians that have actually come out against it. Most really don't care. They know they are going to get screwed by the record company, they are mostly interested in selling concert tickets and merchandise.
