All my Koi are Dead!!!

I have a nice pond in front of the house with a water fall and A small Japanese tree weeping over it, real nice...well, I looked into my pond today and ALL my koi fish are dead!!! Had seven of them, My biggest was over a foot long and they are all belly up now.

I'm going to have the water tested, but man am I pissed off. Three years I have those fish!

Angie77 09-16-2007 10:07 AM

Well that sucks. I'm sorry that happened. Do you have vengeful neighbors?

Jet - BANNED FOR LIFE 09-16-2007 10:12 AM

Did you forget to feed them or something?

RAM 09-16-2007 10:14 AM

Yes, he's having the water tested because he had forgotten to feed them.

Idiot.

RayVega 09-16-2007 10:18 AM

There's a chance that someone [wife] thought they were putting environmentally safe algae treatment in and accidentally put a harsh water clarifier in...one you can put as much as you want, the other only a capful per 1000 gallons.

I'm not 100% sure, but there's a good chance that was it. Honest mistake, but still sucks!:disgust

Well, they are not cheap. You usually buy them small and grow them, but for the size mine were, they cost a few bucks.

I was just going to say that these fish are not cheap at all. Sorry about you losing your fish :(

RayVega, sorry to hear of the problems with it! We use a product on all our rock garden ponds called "TLC". It's a live bacteria that helps clarify the water, keep down smell, maintain proper nitrate levels and so forth. Since it is not a chemical, you can not overdose the fish. We've used this for over 8 years now and still have nice and healthy Koi and goldfish (seperate pond).

If you can't find it and are really interested, drop me an e-mail and I'll see if I can find a TLC dealer in your area for you. One of my offline ventures happens to be a pond shop :)

Got pics of the setup before their untimely demise?

Ray, consider this: Perhaps 7 bad things would have happened to you. It is said that Koi died when they protect you from something bad.

Good luck.

Cool, thanks. I'll check it out. I have had the pond for years and never had a problem. once in a while if there was a rain or several very hot days in a row it would go a little green and we'd put a little of this barley based natural water clarifier (maybe it's from TLC like you say, I'll have to check). But my wife picked up this chemical based stuff and we never used it. I should have thrown it away, but it was in the closet and she thinks she may have grabbed it instead. the bottles are similar.:(

Once I put too much treatment in my saltwater tank and I lost all but
one of my fish. It sucked and I know how you feel :Oh crap

I hope that it turns out your wife made a mistake as that would be a better alternative to always wondering if one of your neighbors did it and having to give them the stink eye.

On a side note, my friend just put a fish pond in his backyard. He had trouble with Ospreys catching his fish so he strung a bunch of line over the pond to keep the birds from diving in. Then he had problems with cats and racoons grabbing fish out of the pond so he put so much landscaping around it you can barely see it. Now it's one big eyesore :1orglaugh

lol, so who's invited to the BBQ?

RayVega 09-16-2007 10:54 AM

Koi Sushi anyone?

Matt 26z 09-16-2007 11:17 AM

A few years ago I brought a couple small Koi in from outside to raise them in a tank. They were fine for two or three years, then the power went out one night. Without the filters moving and aerating the water, they died.

That's funny. I was always worried about raccoons, but they never got a fish. A neighborhood cat also sat perched on a flat stone atop the waterfall every damn day watching those fish, but never got one.
