web hosting! again...i know
Ok...so I'm looking for some help on choosing a virtual hosting provider. I would first like to say that
i'm pretty much a noob. I have worked personally with someone who dealth with affiliate programs such as tcg. I know of the general forums he used to direct traffic, certain tricks like geo-triangulation to increase banner-directed conversion ratio, seo formulas for thumb-nail sites, etc. So even though I haven't tried to break into the market solo, i have a general direction and knowledge of what i'am working towards. As long as i can mimick what i have learned accurately, i am certain i can make at least enough cash to make it worth my time, or at least make it a worth-while learning experience. These are the companies I came up with after searching the gfy forums, and from personal recommendations... naked hosting webair dream host dwhs I tried to go to dreamhost and dwhs, but both sites were down...which isn't exactly inspirational. The storage on naked hosting and transfer is impressive, much larger than all the companies i looked at i believe. They also have a $50 setup fee for month to month accounts, and a long list of perks. Rather than impress me, this strikes a warning signal within to me. Seems too good to be true, and the $50 setup fee makes me think they don't care much if you stay with them, cause they already got a chunk of you cash. It seems the long list of perks is a bit fluffed as well, but as i mentioned earlier, i am noobish, so i'm not sure. I am concerned about startup fees, because I don't really expect to make any money for a few months, and i dont want to get ripped off if i decide i dont like the service after the first month. I dont expect alot of traffic to start with, and for that reason I would lean more towards webair, so i can test out a few things without investing alot of cash. I want to be able to host many different sites to test theories and affiliates, I want decent speed, as nobody wants to wait for a page to load. Though all companies advertise 99.9 up-time, i'm assuming there's some kind of loophole to their implication, whateva. if everyone advertises that, it doesnt impress me at all. Customer service reliability will likely be an issue, has anyone had major problems with naked hosting or webair? and as a side note, if i went with naked hosting, i would like to take advantage of a few gigs of space i probably wouldnt use, and store my mp3 archive. I'm NOT lookin to make a warez site or anything like that, mabey have the directory pw protected so i could let a few of my friends d/l some songs, mabey specific to IP so the pw couldnt be given out and abused. is that the type of thing that will violate ToS with naked hosting? hmm...i think that's all. traffic direction to thumb-nail sites that have banner adds linked to affiliate probrams. is naked hosting a pipe dream? will i risk losing $50 on the setup fee because the service sucks, or should i go with web-air for a cheap solution to test my skills? is there anything I'm not thinking about, services that i would absolutely need that any of these providers don't have, that could cripple what i want to do? thx for your advice. |

I could never bring myself to recommend a virtual as Ive suffered too many times with a 99.9% up time guarantee that bares no relation to real life. I can however vouch for Luke (Chili Host). Ive heard a lot about him and his company and never once heard a bad thing, in fact his customer tend to rave about him.
If you absolutely must go for a virtual account, id say that Chili is the best youll get. |
I was out at the WYPD webmaster event in Las Salinas last week, so I apologize beforehand for bumping a three day old thread.
As far as Naked Hosting goes, let me say that our month to month setup fee is not because we do not want to retain our customers. We actually have a high retention rate. Our customers love us! The reason for the setup fee is simple. Our accounting department spends less time on pre paid accounts vs. monthly accounts. There are fewer invoices, credit cards to process etc. This does not even take into account the late notices, collection letters and the time it takes to terminate accounts that are seriously past due. We pass on this savings to our pre paid customers. Hopefully this clears up any questions you may have had in regards to our billing options. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact me directly: sales at nakedhosting dot com or ICQ 61462417 |
