A Somber Moment This Morning.
 
I come in to the office this morning to a message left on our customer support line overnight. It was a woman calling in regarding an account "her son signed up for."

"Great," I think... another mother complaining that her underage son stole her credit card to make a fraudulent purchase, and some how thinks we're to blame for it all.


I dial in the numbers... she picks up, and it turns out I couldn't have been more wrong.

Her son was sent to Iraq 3 weeks ago, and was killed in action a week after he arrived. She was looking to get his financial matters in order, and so I helped her as I was able.

I knew the last name sounded familiar... I remember talking to the same user the week before he shipped out.

Kinda somber when the reality of what's going on hits you like that.

That really sucks. My brother-in-law just came back from two tours in Baghdad and a tour in Afghanistan. He Say's we don't see 1/10 of the shit that is going on over there.

What sucks about the story also is the embarrassment that his mom has to know what porn sites he was a member of. That kinda sucks too.

I hope they bring those boys and girls home soon.

That really sucks.

I had a similar situation happen to me several years ago. I had just started a part time job working for a call center. On my second night the calls we were making were to people in Florida asking them to contact their congressmen and urge them to oppose a cigarette sales tax increase that had been purposed. Obviously the company I was working for had been hired by the tobacco company.

I call a number and a woman answers the phone. I ask for a Bob and she says he is not there asks who I am. As per the script I tell her my name and that I am calling on behalf of phillip morris tobacco. She then says, "he died from lung cancer about 6 months ago." I didn't know what to say. I just said, "Oh, I'm sorry to bother you." I hung up the phone and told them I needed a different assignment. They didn't give it to me so I went to lunch and never went back.

I wouldn't buy it....i did customer support for a 3k+ active member site, & the shit i heard would make you both cry & laugh.
